Invest in proactive strategies - the FBI, the CIA, the NSA, the Dept. of Homeland Security - the organizations that actually prevent the terrorist activity from occurring . . . Limit reactive military intervention as they have never really had success in "nation building."

1. Prevention
-Simply put, we need to do a better job on protecting the home front. While it is true that the terrorists who brought down the towers were here legally, basically they knocked on our front door and we let them in without looking through the peephole; with our open borders, our back door is wide open for anyone to just waltz right in. We seriously need to begin securing our borders right now. If we send a man to the moon, we most certainly can build a half-way decent barrier. We also need to start looking at who is here and who wants to come here legally, and do some thorough background checks. I don't mean look at every Muslim, I mean look at everyone coming in. It's not like the only people who have attacked us throughout history have been Muslims.
2. Eradication
-Take out Bin Laden, find him and capture/kill him. That would most certainly deal a major blow to the morale of at least Al-Qaeda. We need to get a larger force out there and find him, we can do it. Again if we can land a man on the moon, we can find one guy. Al-Zawahiri, the Ayatollahs, all of the commanders of the Jihad, we need to take them out, whether by our own hands or by the hands of our allies, or by the hands of their people. (I.E. An Iranian Revolution perhaps, I mean with the recent gas rationing in Iran, just one of the many offenses that the Iranian government has inflicted upon the Iranian, I think we may see something happen very soon.)
3. Education
-We need to begin trying to reach out to the Muslim community at home and around the world. We know that these Muslim extremists are not representatives of the majority of Muslims, nor are they an accurate representation of what Islam really is, most Muslims know this to be true; however, the terrorists are growing in power and influence and are recruiting more people to their cause every single day and we need to stop this. We have to reach out to Muslims, especially the youth ok? They are the future, today's seven year old may become the suicide bomber of tomorrow if he is brainwashed by the extremists, if they get to him before we can. We have to at least try on the homefront, before radical Islam gets a good foothold like it has in the U.K.
4. Stop the fear
-We as a nation must stand together, united, behind the old adage that FDR once proclaimed; that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. We must send a message to the terrorists who wish to spread destruction and fear, that WE ARE NOT AFRAID! We must continue to live our lives as if 9/11 never even happened. I know earlier that I said we need to take terrorism seriously and to take a few steps to stop terrorists, but at the same time we must go on with our lives, we must return to normal. Our biggest weapon under our belt is our resolve. If we permanently change a major aspect on the way we live our lives, because of the actions of a few cowards, then they have won.
In other words, speak softly and carry a big stick.
EDIT: Venom, I know it happened, everyone does. I understand what you are saying, we do need to acknowledge that it happened and we need to try to prevent it from happening again. I'm just saying we can't become paranoid about the situation, we can't be shaken by this. Our daily lives should not undergo a major alteration because of one event; to me that is how the terrorists beat us, by getting under our skin and into our collective psyche and asserting some sort of control through fear.

We deal with that slime by refusing to kowtow to their view of the world. Their view is a strictly controlled society under strict religious rule. Our view is that of a free and open society unhindered by government or religious intervention in our lives.
When we go into a panic and reel in civil liberties and curtail civil rights following a terrorist attack we play STRAIGHT into their hands as we are moving towards THEIR view of the world.
The red in our glorious flag stands for the blood that is shed for our way of life. Blood shed in our history, blood shed today, and blood yet to be shed in the preservation of the American way of life. It's not just the blood of our Founding Fathers, the militiamen at Concord Green & Lexington Bridge and our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines and Coasties who serve today, but the blood of ALL Americans civilian and military alike who have given their lives either in defense of or because of our unique way of life. It is a high price to pay, yet it is a price that we ALL must be prepared to pay at any time and without notice or warning. It's what makes us true Red Blooded Americans!
We defeat these bastards by standing proud with a single voice and purpose: "You will NOT change us! We are Americans and we'll gladly shed our blood to preserve the greatest nation on earth, our freedom, our liberty, and our way of life!"
P.S. I'm a liberal. Go figure!

Not the way the incompetent Bushies have. They've mostly made the problem worse.
Here's what to do:
1) Stop invading countries.
2) Improve covert means like infiltration.
3) Improve relations with the rest of the world so they'll be more willing to help us.
4) Win hearts and minds of the uncommitted, rather than push them towards jihad. When we helped out after the Tsunami in Indonesia, their high rate of anti-Anerican sentiment went significantly down.

Monitor the hate speech coming out of US mosques. When it crosses the line and advocates violence, it loses the protection of the First Amendment. Take the radical Imams and put them on the next cargo ship to any arab country, and close the mosque where they were speaking.
That'll take care of it here. What other countries do about it is their business.

Here's my honest opinion. Let's leave Iraq and let them kill each other off. Use all of our soldiers and all that money we are spending over there to guard our major cities, buildings and landmarks. Use the National Guard to Guard the Nation!
That way --a. if a terrorist tries something, he can be shot on the spot by a sniper hiding somewhere and
b. the rest of the terrorists can kill each other off in their own home countries.

Each of them needs to be converted to Christianity. Unfortunately that is unlikely, since converting carries the death penalty under islamic law. My "personal philosophy" is that we need to defend ourselves against their extremism. My "personal philosophy" is that appeasement is not the way to do it. I understand myself pretty well. I understand that I am against anyone who thinks that it is right to kill everyone who disagrees with their middle ages mentality, and encourages their children to kill themselves while doing it. The "religion of peace" is the most extreme example of collective hatred in the history of mankind. Since they are impervious to reason, "dealing with them" may take extreme measures, in self defense, as they become more militant. Hastening their religious leaders' descent into hell is an option.

Deal with terrorist organizations through economic strangling.
Never violate the rule of law, participate in terrorism yourself, or assist other terrorist organizations in order to fight the terrorist organizations you are going after through proxy warfare.
Maintain moral superiority over the terrorists, don't give the extremists more ammo to convince other Muslims to join with them.
Don't ignore non-Islamic terrorists and extremists.
Use war as a LAST RESORT and it must be limited to fighting terrorism.

I would take their Islamic ideaism to them-----they set off a bomb in New York City, we put a cruise missile into downtown Mecca----an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth. We capture a islamic fundimentalist who took part in a terror plot, we execute him and bury him in a pig-skin (see if he gets those 74 virgins now).
By the way, I really don't care what it reveals about my personal philosophy.

I want them stopped. By any and every means possible.
Kind of like what we do in our nation when someone takes their religious beliefs to the point of killing other human beings.
Minus the US Constitutional protections, of course.
