My 13 inch albino oscar has had HITH for 1.5 yeas. He has a 60 gallon tank to share with an algae eater. I do partial water changes every week and have 2 dual filters running.

Has anyone really cured HITH?

**PLEASE do not send me a link. I want to hear if you personally cured it and HOW. I've use antibiotics, have been using multivitamins with his food, never use feeders.

There is no real cause that has been identified as the reason a fish gets HITH. Some have said that it is the hexamita protazoan that causes it, but it has been found in healthy fish as well. Some say if you do not rinse your activated carbon enough to get rid of the dust, that will cause it too. I have mixed emotions on that.

I have cured HITH on an oscar that I rescued from a tank that was so filthy I could not see him when I went to pick him up. They eventually gave me the tank too, along with a 14" pleco that nobody knew was in there. The pleco had no HITH. It does affect angels and discus as well as some of the larger ornamental cichlids.

To begin with, I started with fresh water and did 30-40% water changes every 3-4 days. Oscars are dirty guys and I siphoned the gravel every week to get that waste and uneaten food out of the tank. Lots of high protein foods and no feeders. I gave him chunks of whitefish from the grocery store and good quality pellets. It took about 6 months for it to finally go away, but I noticed that in about a month the holes were getting smaller.

Good luck, it will take some time, but you can cure it.

HITH never goes away. But, in a sense you can stop it from progressing and "cure" your fish by bringing the fishy back to health -- thereby leaving some holes but having a healthy fish if that makes sense. I have babies with no disease, but I do know of an area expert who cares for these guys.

I've never had HITH in Oscars but did come across it when breeding Discus, some fish I imported from Singapore, I tried several proprietary treatments before calling a friend who is a Vet he put me onto Chloramphenicol which i had to go to another Vet locally to get, I vaguely remember having to go through the process of treatment about 3 times before I got rid of it. But it seemed to work, as the pair lasted for about 5years before I sold them on with no more evidence.
