One of my Tiger Barbs has a red strip on its Dorsal Fin....and the other one doesn't!!
Does this mean anything?? The one with the red strip is a bit of a bully and I was wondering if there was any significance behind the colouring of the fish!!

Tiger barbs are renouned for playing rough which is why they should ideally be kept in shoals of 6 or more, as for the red on the Dorsal fin, I've noticed it in several fish over the years and is a natural colouring.

That redish orangish coloring on the nose is how to distinguish the male. The females don't have it. But if you only have 2, then you will always have a bully where tiger barbs are concerned. It should be lessened having 1 male and 1 female as it sound like you have but generally only 2 tiger barbs will mean that there will be only bullying the other until it kills it. The only way to stop the aggression on the one fish is to add more.

Tiger barbs will constantly bicker amongst themselves for dominance. It's just what they do.

The coloring significance though is male vs female.

Hi, what you think is bulling might be a male tiger barb trying to mate with a female tiger. Male Tiger barbs tend to have a bit more coloring than the females do. Tiger barbs like to scatter their eggs all over. So I would suggest that you make sure you have them in a tank that is heavily planted with hornwort or java moss and good Luck.

Hiya:

Look to see if the fin is pointed. This is a way to distinguish males from females.

Remember in nature, males are typically more colorful, so it makes sense that you may be looking at a male barb.

Also consider: are you sure it is a TIGER barb? There are cherry barbs, too.

Many times red streaks in the fins or gills is a sign of illness. I'm not sure whether it's bacterial or parisities but there is medicated food you can feed, or treatments you can give him available at pet stores. I would suggest separating him from the rest of the fish while you are treating.

you need to start feeding blood worms it complements the colours in the scales.or you will get a colour enhancer at any puppy shop.examine the nitrite point it may be inflicting the fish to lose its colorations.
