Last night I was talking to somebody who supposedly LOVED Pink Floyd. However, everything he said about them made me think that he only knows 1 or 2 songs at best. He started talking about Another Brick In The Wall (of course), and I asked him which was his favorite...part 1, 2 or 3. He said part 1, but then started reciting the lyrics to part 2. He then got the words wrong....according to him it's "No dark sarcasm at the crossroads."

What do you think when people do stuff like this? Do you think they really are huge fans? What about when people misspell the names of the bands (i.e. Lynard Skynard, Lead Zeppelin, Jimmy Hendricks Experience)? I mean, I don't expect anybody to tell me Jim Morrison's birth date or where he grew up...I mean, if you can that is fantastic but I don't think it's necessary to be a fan of the music. But, there are some simple things that you would expect fans to know...like how to spell the band's name.

Some of us, however, DO enjoy he bands we advertise. I change my name occasionally to reflect whatever band I am currently addicted to. I don't claim to be any band's biggest fan. I can't name off every song Pink Floyd made. I've never been to a concert. I'm trying to say that we can't say someone is a "Fake Rocker" just because they want people to know what they like.

Before I answer, I would like to say- it wasn't me she was talking to. Anyway,

No, I don't think they are huge fans. They are the guys who your stuck in a car with, an awesome rock song comes on, and they sing- at the top of their lungs, no less-horribly. They screw up the lyrics, they get the timing wrong, and when you try to correct them, they act like YOU'RE the dumbass. You show them concrete proof, but they still doubt you.
They do, however, see rock as something that it is- greatness. They want what we have. They want to be true fans, but they are simply unable to. And some of them, I'm sure, do it just to look cool.

Some, however, just might be making a simple mistake. I think back on times I have said something idiotic, and wonder, "How the heck could I have said that?"

Rock on.

Edit- I don't believe there is a certain criteria for being a "fan." You are or you aren't. All I believe is, like zippythejessi said, they should be able to carry on an inteligent conversation. I don't necessarily believe they should have to write an essay interpreting the song or anything, but they should be able to come out with more than-

Me: So what do you think about Pink Floyd?
Other Person: OMG I LIKE TOTALLY LOVE THEM!!
Me: Why?
Other Person: OMG BECAUSE THEY'RE LIKE THE BEST BAND EVER!
Me: Why do you say that?
Other Person: OMG BECAUSE THEY'RE LIKE AWESOME!

They should know some basic stuff. Like someone earlier said, a true fan of Pink Floyd should know something about the Barret era. If they can't name any albums besides DSOTM, they probably aren't a true fan.

The "rocker" look is now popular so now everyone seems to want to be a rocker. I've been called a poser (I don't exactly look like a rocker...) by people who though Darkside of the Moon was Pink Floyd's first album! Come on! It's ridiculous, alot of people just think that being a major Pink Floyd fan gives them the cool image of a drugged out hippie. It's so stupid. People just wanna look cool cause bands like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Rush, Boston, and The Who come with some air of respect and they might not even enjoy the music, but just want people to think that they do.
I know people who wear Skynyrd T's without ever knowing anything more than Freebird.
I even heard people refer to their so called favorite band Led Zeppelin as a "he". I've heard people also refer to Pink Floyd as a he or talk about Pink Floyd going on tour....it's so stupid.

Lot's of people do that, but when you really need to worry is when they think David Gilmour's or Roger Waters' name is "Pink Floyd". Most true fans will know about the Syd Barret Era. By the way I'm a big fan of The Who. Like the Tommy avatar. My favorite Who song would have to be "Dreaming from the Waist on Down" and The Who by numbers is my favorite album.

omg i lyk lyk pink floiyd!!!!!!!!111!!!!!

Liking old bands is a trend right now for some reason. I mean some things even fans disagree on... you like Pink Floyd, I take it? Well, no one knows what the pict (AKA Roger Waters with a Scottish accent) is saying in Several Species... to me it sounds like he's talking about smacking people with fish and crying because of Craig Marion.

I claim myself in no way to be an obsessive fan of what I'm not an obsessive fan of, but some people are just strange. "Oh, yeah, Pink Floyd... is she giving a tour?" "Lynyrd Skynyrd... what a rocking English band!" Hopefully the trend will pass.

Odd note: it seems that actual "biggest fans in the world" are not trendy, just people that wear pink glittery shirts with the Led Zeppelin swan dude on it. Yes, I said pink, glittery, and Led Zeppelin in the same sentence.

To Precious J: Tommy-ish much?

My definition of a true fan is someone who can discuss the band's music intelligently. I don't think it's necessary to know where or when they were born, or how many members the band went thru before they were signed, blah, blah, blah. As for spelling the band's name - some people just have a mental block about spelling in general. I'd be more offended if they mispronounced the band's name - like calling Skynrd "Leonard Skin-ard" or something like that.

If you claim to be a fan of The Eagles, for example, you'd better be able to tell me YOUR interpretation of "Hotel California" and where you came to that conclusion. (I'm using that as an example because that's the song on the radio.)

I would expect a huge fan of a band to know the correct spelling of a band's name; the names of the band members; the names of their albums; the songs on each album; the lyrics to their most popular songs...

Well I am now not an boastful individual so I could hesitate to mention I am my largest fan - my husband is besides!!! You do must love your self despite the fact that earlier than you'll be able to fairly love anybody else so I wager I am comfy with myself!

Obviously NOT a Pink fan unless you own at least 3 albums (this is my opinion). As for spelling... not really an indication on fan status... Some people just can't spell.

I think people do this so that they can fit in to some sort of crowd, y'know, jumping on the bandwagon so to speak! It's like they think that listening to (or pretending to listen to) a certain band will grant them instant coolness!

If he thinks he's a huge fan, then let him think it.Don't take away what seems to be one of his only pleasures, just because he might not know all the songs.
