1)
Let x be the smaller number and y be the larger number
x + y = -2
2x + 3y = 1

x = -2 - y
2(-2-y) + 3y = 1
-4 - 2y + 3y = 1
y = 5

x + (5) = -2
x = -7

2)
Let G be Gail's stamps and H be Helen's stamps
2G + 2 = H
G + 10 = H

2G + 2 = G + 10
G = 8

(8) + 10 = H
H = 18

Have some confidence.

1)
x + y = -2
2x + 3y = 1

y = -2 - x
2x + 3(-2 - x) = 1
2x - 6 - 3x = 1
-x = 7

-7 + y = -2
y = 5

2)
y = 2x + 2
x + 10 = y

x = y - 10

y = 2(y - 10) + 2
y = 2y - 20 + 2
-y = -18
y = 18

x = 18 - 10
x = 8

Helen's stamps: x

Gail's stamps: y

So we have x=2y+2

and y+10=x

So 2y+2=y+10

y=8, x=18

Helen has 18 stamps, Gail has 8.

Edit: Apologies. That's what I get for reading too quickly.

I missed the "two more than." Solution has been edited accordingly.

Wow, I never had Yahoo answers when I was in high school. I had to ask the teacher if I didn't understand a question. Perhaps you should ask your teacher, make her earn her high salary and cushy benefit package. Besides, she'll help you get the right answer. You're taking a chance by asking people on Yahoo.

1)x+y = -2
2x+2y=-4...1st
2x +3y=1.2nd
solving both we get
y= 5
x = -7

2)g+10 = h
h=2g+2
so
g+10 =2g+2
g = 8

so now to be equal both shud hv 18 stamps
