Our government has supported regimes (or revolutions) all over the world that practiced torture, arbitrary arrest, extra-judicial executions, and "disappearances". Including Saddam Hussein, and Noriega (was paid by the CIA), and the "freedom fighters" in Afghanistan that became the Taliban.

Sometimes it was to fight communism (Nicaragua, El Salvador, etc.) Sometimes it was to protect "American interests", as they called corporate profits.

I believe it is because America has elected ourselves "Big Brother" or "World Police". Our government which is supposed to be for and by the people is run by the few that can afford to buy their political office. We continue to stick our nose where it doesn't belong and attempt to strong arm other nations to conform to our way of living. Because here in America, we like to vote in leaders who aren't afraid of killing the opposition, and making sure they don't become opposition for years to come... then when we see them making a comeback, we demonize them and kill them some more.

Because we often get into other people's business, thinking our way of life is better. We start wars in their country because of it, thinking we're helping them out, but really we're just destroying their way of life. (Vietnam, Iraq, you name it.)
