why is it every so often an unarmed black man is shot by the police? (if this happens to white men at all, it doesn't happen nearly as often)

why is there a young Black man sitting in prison right now for getting or sex from a 15 y/o white girl at the age of 17. They convicted him of aggravated child molestation despite the fact that he was a child himself. And yet there are 50 year white pedophiles giving communion at this very moment.

I dont have time to list every example but you get the picture.

If it is not racism. then what is it?

Omega - if R. Kelly peed on white girl he would be under the jail.

No, it’s not racism; it’s a result of authorities taking the path of least resistance to get convictions. Blacks, Browns and other minorities all suffer under the same level of injustice; where you have no money, you have no power.

I agree with some of the points being made. It is true that "authorities take the path of least resistance to get convictions". Likewise, I agree that there is a great deal of personal bigotry involved and that people fall through the cracks when action isn't taken. Someone else mentioned that laws vary depending upon the state. This is quite true.
And I can certainly understand those who are making a point to stress that not every negative occurance involves racism, as it can be quite irritating when someone makes constant claims of racism with regards to every situation he/she experiences or observes. It's also true that other minorities endure racism and that even whites endure racism. However, in my opinion, it is extrememly ignorant to deny the existence of racism towards blacks within law enforcement and the justice stystem. I am in no way implying that everyone who responded to this question is refusing to acknowledge that blacks are targets of racism. However, while not in those words, some DID make this claim-- which is one of the very reasons why it's such a problem. Racism is sort of like a disease-- Denial allows them both to worsen.

What is your basis for stating that unarmed white men are shot by the police less than unarmed black men? Do you have statistical proof of this? If you can show me your reference to support your claim, then I won't dispute it, but otherwise, don't make such a statement without the data to support it.

Secondly, even if the police do shoot unarmed black men, or white men for that matter, what are the surrounding circumstances that resulted in the shooting? A man can be unarmed, and the police can still be justified in shooting him. It simply depends on the facts and circumstances at that time. Your statement comes across in such a manner as to suggest that any and all shootings of unarmed men are not justified. While many are not, this simply isn't true in every case.

Additionally, you suggest by your statement that it's racism if a police officer shoots an unarmed black man. Since you failed to mention the color of the police officers who shoot these unarmed men, I'll assume by the tone of your statement that you are referring to white police officers. Then what is it if a black police officer shoots an unarmed black man? Is that racism because the black man was unarmed, or is it just poor judgment because the officer was black? And what is it if a black police officer shoots an unarmed white man? Is that racism because the unarmed man was white, or was it just poor judgment on the part of the black officer? As you can see, your statement doesn't allow for the possibility that a white officer simply used bad judgment in shooting an unarmed black man.

So then, what message do I take from your statements? If a white police officer shoots an unarmed black man, it's not justified regardless of the circumstances, and it's automatically racism, period.

I'm sure by now that you think I'm taking sides. If you've read carefully, you'll see that I'm simply pointing out that making statements without proof just to make a point and to see what kind of responses you get is careless and irresponsible.

Hey there..I think you are talking about Genarwlo Wilson, and it pains me to see this guy in prison...I see this on our news station every single day. And even though I don' t like Al Sharpton, I am glad he is getting involved in this situation. Seriously if you want to help this guy, there is a petition that you can sign..I will have to go and find it.

But I think more than racism..its the abuse of power. I just think this whole situation was horrible. They were teenagers having consensual oral sex. But its crazy how these 30 and 40 year olds get off with less time.
Genarwlo was 17 and now he is going to have to register as a sex offender.

Well in the US there is the case of a 16 year old BLACK man who made a 10 year old BLACK GIRL preganant and to my knowledge he is NOT in jail, because the FAMILY didn't get behind the PROSECUTION

It has to do with PEOPLE forcing SOCIETY to TAKE ACTION

If PEOPLE don't force, then action falls into the cracks

SO, it is OBVIOUSLY personal BIGOTRY that feeds the fire and THAT you can't regulate or legislate.

I'm sure it happens just as often, the only difference is that the unarmed black man gets more publicity for racism, so you hear it more often. There's an age limit on sex, and whether you're white, hispanic, or black, you're going to jail for it. In some states the legal age is 16, if you're under16 when you have intercourse, and the partner was older, the older one goes to jail.

The laws state that you cannot have sex until you're a certain age, an age that the law feels a person is responsible for their actions and can make their own choices. Until you're the legal age (usually 16 or 18), you have no legal right to consent to sex. Therefore, if you're 15 and a half and you "consent" to sex, you legally have no right to be having sex. Therefore, the partner older than the age in violation gets nailed for it.

Well if it's aggravated ---that's a huge damn deal. -And it's also common law that a male under the age of 18 can have stagetory charges placed against him. ---So, not is isn;t racist. -The whole thing with the priests is bad as well. -Neither is right...you can't pit two things like that against one another.

It is partly ignorance, which is excusable within limits, and partly racism, which is not.
