I recently purchased an antique karo syrup bottle that has pennies in the syrup. The lady said her grandmother was very superstious and had done it intentioally, but she did not remember why?
Anyone have a clue?

I have heard of putting coins in a bottle of honey (with the honey comb) and that is to draw money into the home. I would think that this something like that.

Apparently from what I have been able to find so far it was once believed that karo, pennies, and roofing nails and aspirin would preserve the life of a Christmas tree as well as cut flowers.

Below is an exerpt from the site I found:

Pick a Fire-Safe Christmas Tree
A few simple steps help ensure your tree is fresh and green

To extend the life of the tree, add Floral-Life as recommended for keeping cut flowers fresh. Pennies, Aspirin, Karo syrup and roofing nails added to the water do not extend the tree’s life.

It operates on one of the basic fundamentals of Magick. Sympathetic Magick.
Not sympathy as in feeling sorry for someone one, sympathetic as in establishing the connection to your primary goal with the aid of aesthetics or tools.
Magick really is simple, if you break it down. Think about it this way; syrup is sweet and sticky; money is symbolic of good fortune, ie pennies.
Sweet money=good fortune. The sticky aspect guarantees the good luck or good fortune stays with the person who has it in their possession, or whomever it was made for.
Hope this helps.

My mother's family is from Appalachia, and the older ones did things like that because it meant they'd never go hungry or do without. As long as they had money and food they were rich.

That is a very old and long piece of history to tell it would be a lot easier if you just use your search engine on you computer................. But it is based on that when something taste so good you have to pay for it in one way or another And every time you use this syrup payment is needed............................................................................................
