OKay we have a Hp desktop computer and its a xp and its about 6-7 years old. And its a piece od junk now! It is slow and has tons of junk on it. But I have a question...if we were to buy Windows Vista Basic and delete everything off of this computer and install windows Vista, then would it be like new again?
I am not a computer wiz so I dont know alot, but could we do that? And just get all this stuff off of here and start over.
Any suggestions and comments would be nice!

I wouldn't recommend it. Vista is a lot more resource intensive and the upgrade itself is probably worth more than your system. I did this on a 4 year old system with the trial beta version of Vista and had to revert back to XP because it was just too slow.
You might be better off using your XP installation or recovery disk and doing the same thing. It'll be like the day you bought it but not much faster...
You could also cheaply upgrade the RAM which may improve the performance a little. I gave a friend of mine 256MB of RAM for his 5 year old notebook with 256MB of RAM for a total of 512. One of the processes he was doing it changed it from a 14 minute processing time to a 3 minute processing time! What a difference from a simple upgrade. You can't expect that kind of performance difference on everything but it definitely helps.
Summary
-------------
If you don't do too much other than word processing, email, internet then I'd consider just wiping the drive clean and using the installation/recovery disks (if you have them).
It'll also help if you put the specifications or model # (if you know it) when you ask computer questions so people have a better idea of what you're talking about.

Chances are that the system would not properly support VISTA and you would be hard pressed to find compatible drivers. Stick with the XP and reformat/reinstall. It would make the system run better and maybe get another 2-3 years out of the system.
If you are willing to buy the VISTA OS, you may just want to invest into a new system with VISTA pre-loaded for a few $$ more.

NO!!!! if you think that old computer is slow now wait till you get vista put on it. and i seriously doubt your computer would even install vista. i suggest just reinstalling xp.(that will make your computer run somewhat like it used to) i really suggest getting a new computer. if its 6 years or so old then it is getting very out of date and will have problems running modern applications.

I agree with Eric. Vista is a resource hog, so you may end up being worse off. Try upgrading RAM, and cleaning up some garbage from the hard drive (adware/spyware). Also maybe try uninstalling unnecessary programs. You can probably get it done by one of the neighborhood kids for like 20 bucks, plus the cost of the RAM. ;-)

No it wouldn't make it like new. Plus, Vista has too many compatibility problems. I'm afraid you would not be happy with the results of installing Vista.

if you were to do that it would work like new again. but the only problem is that you computer most likely doesnt have the right hardware to run Vista because of its age. You would also have to go buy some new hardware for the computer.

Well, you could do this, but for windows vista you will need at least 1gb(memory ram) to run it, and its very expensive!
My sugestion is go for a windows xp/ either hm or pro!

You could also wipe the computer clean and reinstall XP. That would make it like new again.
