As has been already pointed out, goldfish lay many eggs scattered all about the tank. In theory it could be one that was laid and not eaten when other fish ate the rest, but far more likely it's a small piece of food or other waste that is growing a very small tuft of fungus.

One egg? I can't really tell you what it might be, but as goldfish lay thousands of eggs at one drop, I very much doubt it's an egg. We would need much more descriptive information to actually possibly help you with what it might be.
Additional Comment: Again, goldfish don't only lay one egg. And their eggs are very, very small. If there were only one, you simply would not see it. It would be virtually impossible. Goldfish eggs look like a blob of watered-down, less creamy tapioca. I have no idea what this thing is "tucked away under one of your trunk decorations," but it's not a goldfish egg.
Goldfish chasing each other can be a sign of either breeding, playing or fighting. We would need more info on their behavior to tell which they're doing.

Goldfish like scatter their eggs all over in a tank. So if there is one there will most likely be lot more very soon. However it sounds like it may be a unfertilized egg that you have found. Since you said that it seems to have tiny strings circling it. So you may only have two female goldfish.

Only one egg? They usually lay hundreds of them at once, but maybe your other fishes ate the rest and that one is just extremely lucky. If you think it's an egg, then get it out of the fish tank and into a smaller tank with no other fishes in there. It it hatches, it's an egg, if it doesn't it's not.
P.S. there might be more eggs in the tank.

Don't worry about it. Goldfish should lay hundreds of eggs. If they spawned early in the morning, they may have eaten all the others, and will likely find the last one and eat it too.
Or it may be hatching and egg yolk is still attached. When it becomes free swimming then you can feed it fry food. I would however get one of those litte tanks and a spong filter. If the parents find the fry they will eat it.

Goldfish lay far more than just one egg. And they have to be near full grown to breed. So if your seeing just one "egg" then I doubt thats what it is. Check out kokosgoldfish.com for anything you need to know about your goldfish.
