Yesterday, I was trying to get my torrents to go faster, and all of the websites that i came across said to do something with your router. So I went to 192.168.1.1 and entered my login info, then i went to port forwarding/triggering in the source column on the left, and i added my ip address. After i did that, my internet on that computer (wireless) stopped working. So now, I'm on my dad's computer, which is wireless as well, and I went to 192.168.1.1 and went to port forwarding on the left, selected my computer, and pressed Delete Service. Afterwards, I tried to use the internet on that computer again, and it still didn't work. It say's it's connected to Netgear, but the internet still isn't working. Any help?

-For the service Name, it was already set to AIM so i just kept it as that, put my IP in, then pressed add.

There are 4 laptops connected to the internet through this router, and I don't want to do anything that will make the internet stop working for all of us, so all i need is to do something for the laptop that isn't working.

Netgear sucks, just get a linksys router and get rid of all the problems.....

Before you made any changes everything worked.

You have a Netgear router; like Linksys, Belkin, D Link, etc these are low end home grade routers which are OK for home use but are not outstanding.

From your info, your LAN subnet is 192.168.1.0/24; default gateway is 192.168.1.1. I suspect you have LAN DHCP set for 192.168.1.2-1923.168.1.255 or all LAN IP addresses available.

Whenever you access your router, use a wired, not a wireless connection.

Now let's describe what port forwarding does - as this will help you somewhat.

When you port forward, you assign a router port # to a given LAN IP addressed device. Whenever an inbound transmission is set for that port # it is forwarded to the specific LAN IP addressed device. You also have to define it as TCP or UDP when you assign a port forward.

If you have a LAN pc with a dynamic LAN IP you must first give it a static LAN IP and this IP must not be part of the DHCP pool of IP addreses. This uniquely defines the specific LAN pc.

In your case, first go to the router and remove the two port forwards you set up. Each router is different but all allow you to remove these. Once removed, save the router config and make sure the two malfunctioning pcs are now working. You may need to reboot the pcs and router for this to take effect.

Go to one of the pcs that did not work. Open command prompt (start, run - type in cmd and hit enter). At the prompt, type in "ping 192.168.1.1" without quotes and hit enter. You should receive 4 successful responses. If you do, the pc to router link is working, if not you have a LAN config (wireless config probably) problem you need to resolve. Assuming you were successful, in command prompt type "ping 4.2.2.2" and hit enter. If successful, you can reach the internet; if not there is a problem with the internet config and all units are likely down so this should be ok. Now in command prompt type in "ping yahoo.com" and hit enter; you should see 4 positive ping responses; if not you have a DNS problem in your pc's LAN config or with the router. If all pings are ok, open web browser to any public site and you should have internet. If not, write again telling us what you did and we can help more.

Back to port forwarding - If you need to port forward, and I do not believe you do, here is what you need to do:

1. change router LAN DHCP range to 192.168.1.150-192.168.1.255; save router configuration
2. reboot all pcs so they have new ip addresses in the new range.
3. open command prompt in one pc and type "ping 192.168.1.2" and hit enter; you should NOT have a response. If you do, try 192.168.1.3 and work you way up until you have a non-response; write this ip address down.
4. go to the pc you wish to port forward to and change it for static IP (right click on lan connection, select properties, highlight Internet Connection TCP/IP and click on properties). Change settings to use the IP address that did not have ping response success (192.168.1.2 or whichever), subnet 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.1, DNS 192.168.1.1). Save and reboot. Ping 192.168.1.1 and 4.2.2.2 and yahoo.com as discussed above to see if all is working as it should.
5. Now go to router, select port forwarding, enter the port # as directed by who recommended you port forward, define it as TCP or UDP as recommended, and enter the above pc's static IP.
6. Go back to the pc with static ip and ping 192.168.1.1, 4.2.2.2, and yahoo.com and all should be ok.
