well you could go to all the typical tourist destinations and you'd have a great time. Or you can try visiting places off the beaten path (middle America). We're much friendlier here and the cities (St Louis, Chicago) have plenty to do and there is plenty of scenery and charm in the surrounding areas and as a bonus everything is much cheaper (accommodations, car rentals, activities). As far as nightlife goes there is plenty of it in the cities and in St Louis there are breweries which you can tour.

I went to vacation for a week in Maine and loved it. We flew into Bangor, rented a car and drove all over the state. There was awesome food all over the state, awesome shopping at outlet stores in Freeport, hiking in Millinoket, and in Bar Harbor at Acadia Nat'l Park..

We went in October when the leaves were changing and it was breath-takingly beautiful!

I also spent a vacation in Alaska and it was amazing. I went there in August and there was tons of stuff to see and do.
We flew into Anchorage, rented bicycles and rode on the Tony Knowles coastal trail, Saturday Market, took the Alaskan Railroad down to Seward, did sea kayaking, day cruises for wildlife viewing, whales, dolfins, etc, dog sledding, went up to Denali area, and went hiking, hourseback riding, white water rafting, etc. helicopter tour, it was Awesome.

I highly recommed either of these 2 destinations for multiple activities for all ages and plenty of scenary and history.

It is a longer much longer flight, but what about Honolulu/Waikiki Beach? It is a very cosmopolitian town with lots of night life and booze cruises, etc. The weather there is perfect year round. Just a thought....maybe you could fly from England to NY - spend a couple days there...then fly onto LA spend a couple days there...then fly onto Honolulu for a week.

Try Chicago, I never been but I hear its fun with a lot of night clubs, also Atlanta is fun its huge and there are a lot of night clubs there as well. Those are some major cities that are not the mainstream when one thinks of the States.
Have fun
