One of the last acts of Barry Goldwater in the political realm was to support Bob Dole for President in 1996. He made note of how religious conservatives had taken over the party and he was not sure the party then resembled what he knew in 1964.
Indeed, these trends have accelerated. Goldwater had little love for the social brand of conservatism of today. He said he didn't care if somebody was straight so long as they could shoot straight. He was opposed to communism and believed in smaller government. The Republicans today continue to spend more and more money, something Goldwater would oppose. In fact, conservatives today seem more interested in cutting taxes than in cutting spending.
Generally speaking, he would bemoan the state of conservatism and would urge that new leaders get it back on the proper path of more limited government.

Goldwater Conservatism is alive and well. It is just no longer inherent in the Republican party.
The movement is more in line with the Libertarian Party today.

He would say that conservative used to be an indication that the person cared about our country and the future of young Americans. The current batch of "conservatives" are more liberal in terms of spending money that just isn't there than any administration in history. I hope my ten year old nephew has some good ideas about how to pay for this war because it'll be up to him.
