Mankind's most useful invention has been fire. The reason is that all other technology is based on fire. Only agriculture is not directly dependant on fire, but is almost always associated with it. Language was not so much an invention as it was an evolutionary process, as was the ability to walk upright. Tool use was also somewhat evolutionary, but got a great boost when fire began to be used as a tool itself.

We are now poised on the threshold of the next greatest of all human inventions. This will be the ability to read genetic information and create completely new species out of nothing but our own imaginations. We are probably a few centuries away from accomplishing this, but it will obviously change the world, not to mention ourselves.

Been thinking about this kind of question myself for a long time. But i think it has to be "GLASS".
Think living everyday in the modern world without a "glass".
I am not only thinking about an spectacles itself.
while i was driving in the middle of a stormy winter night.I was still comfortable inside the car with heating on.
Now without the glass in front of me it could have been a different story.
windows, television, cars, airplane etc.have one way or the other has parts made of GLASS. Even everyday drinking vessels are made of GLASS.
Now, there is one dis-advantage the mirror (sometimes) when i see myself in the morning (joke).
But can anyone disaggree with me?

The bread cutter. Think about it. If not for factory bread cutters, the usual loaves you buy at the stores would look just crappy and fall apart.
