I am turning 40 this year and every time I think about it I want to cry! 30 didn't bother me, 35 didn't bother me. 40! I feel so darn old! How have you all dealt with it?

Stefbear, I think you are wise to be trying to prepare for this event. After watching my older sister spend her 40th birthday crying (yes, for the whole day!) I was determined that I would try to make it a positive experience, and determined to make the years ahead the best ones, not sad or disappointing. Yes, it's true... we are older now and maybe there's some disappointment in letting go of some of the dreams of our earlier days.... we're not going to become astronauts, or super models.... may never climb Mt Everest, or fit back into "Those Jeans" *lol*. But that doesn't mean there's not a lot of wonderful stuff still ahead. But having seen my sister's crisis, I wanted to prepare mentally and physically for this milestone.

Firstly, I spent a lot of time reading and researching on how to move forward into Phase 2 in the healthiest way possible, so I made sure I got my act together about nutrition and exercise and looking after myself.

I made a long list of the things, large and small, that really make me happy, and resolved to spend more time attending to these things.

Then I thought long and hard about all the things in my life that needed to be let go of as I move forward - things that do not serve me well any longer. Old attitudes? Outworn relationships? Outgrown clothes? I saw it as a great symbolic time to get rid of a lot of the "clutter" in my life to make way for new things.

Last, I really thought about how I wanted to BE in the coming years. What sort of person? What sort of life? What sort of appearance? It really helps to find some older role models that you really admire and try to identify what it is that makes them seem special.

Prepare for the birthday itself - try to think of it as a "rite of passage" - you are now a woman who knows what she knows, and is who she is. If there is no-one in your life that can arrange the type of celebration you would like, be sure to give a gift to yourself (maybe a symbolic piece of jewellery, or something that indicates a new interest you would like to develop) and be sure to treat yourself really well (a spa day, or spending time doing your favourite thing or going to your favourtie place).

Lastly, just go with the flow. I hope the next stage of your life is a fulfillling and happy one.

Oh c'mon. They say 40 is the new 30. If you didn't have any trouble turning 30, then 40 is no big deal. Your age is just a number. How you feel about it, inside, how you carry yourself, etc. is what is important. I turn 51 on July 17th and have never felt better. I got a LOT of livin to do.

Don't deal with it ACCEPT IT! I mean come on, there is nothing you can do to stop it, just because you turn a certain age doesn't mean you have to change. If you don't like the look of 40 year old women who sit at home and cook for there family all day and knit and change diapers, then DON'T BE ONE, get out and explore your world. Act as young as you feel, don't let your age limit you.
