and snarky supporters too!

Do the opponents of the electoral college realize that while
Bush received 500,000 fewer votes than Gore in 2000,
Kerry would have won the 2004 election with 3,000,000 less votes than Bush in 2000 if Kerry had just been able to swing Ohio?

What folks must take into consideration is the "discrimination" factor involved here. Take the state of Alaska versus New York state. I mean there's more people that habitat in the sky scrappers in New York CITY alone than the entire state of Alaska has for total population, including the American Natives of both the Aleut & Eskimo peoples!!! Good grief, how could one expect FAIR representation with out the electoral college considering the disparity in population density between these two examples??? Sure, there has been some minor gliches with in that institution in the past, but NOTHING is perfect in an imperfect world. With QUALITY/HONEST representatives like Bob Barr & Ron Paul keeping an eye on things, the electoral college has performed it's task of equal representation with remarkable dependability through the years. In a representative republic, this type of representation has DEFINITELY proven superior to a democracy as it eliminates demographic problems that plague a democracy.

I support Bush, but I am still opposed to the electoral college. It gets in the way of the popular vote and therefore results in the election of a president who may not have a sufficiently large popular support base.

The question that should be asked/answered is why does it exist?

Answer: If it didn't exist the candidates would just go after the densely populated states & ignore the open area.

BTW if Gore had carried his home state Florida would have been immaterial.

Yes, we know.

That is why the Electoral College needs to be disbanded. Let the popular vote be the one that counts.
