I've tried letting the coals burn with the lid open, whith the lid shut and the holes ontop open and also with it closed up and the fire continues to go out and the coals begin to get cold.
I need help!

build your briquettes into a pyramid with newspaper in the middle[a cone], use a little bacon grease to pour on top, then light!

Buy "Matchlight" its charcoal and lighter fluid in one and you light the bag. Leave the lid of your grill off and when the charcoal turns grey some say white and its smoldering your then ready to put the meat on. No lighter fluid smell or taste. No wondering if you should put the meat on now. This works! Depending on how much meat you are grilling you may have to add additional charcoal.
Personally I think putting the lid on that early in the game is killing you!

Either purchase a charcoal chimney or make one out of a large coffee can. Place some newspaper on the bottom, then the charcoal, then charcoal lighter fluid. let the fluid soak in about 5 minutes, recoat with a little more fluid and light. Let sit about 15 minutes and then dump into the bottom of the grill.
