No need to be scared, but if scared you are then talk to your sister more and familiarize yourself with your own body and talk about it alot it might take some of the fear away...the Gyno is one place a woman can go to and not feel ashamed about what goes on down south. Whether you are active or not, the Dr. is well trained in being sensitive to a young womans apprehensions. If you have a female Dr. this might help you become less nervous (but men Dr. are JUST as qualified) They see who-has' every day and night so seeing yours is like looking at a blank piece of paper..meaning..they all look the same no matter how many you have in front of you! They are proffessional and they keep it this way. As far as hurting, I can't say, everyones' threshhold of pain is different. It just might feel very uncomfortable. I'm a mother of 2 and so obviously I have had sex AND seen the Gyn...and even still after delivering 2 babies...having the Dr insert their instruments feels uncomfortable...its' just something that we need to do, so we try not to think too much about it. Your sister is right and you should be seeing a GYN especially at your age. whether you are active or not, making sure you are in working order is always a smart thing to do. Make an appointment and don't be afraid to tell your Dr that you are scared and worried about the insertion of her?his tools because you are not sexually active. They will have NO problems trying to make you feel as comfortable as possible. Good Luck sweetie. Just try an drelax because the more you tense up the more uncomfortable it will get.

Going to the gyno does not hurt at all. The stuff they stick up you is just a long q-tip and all you feel is a pinch for a split second. That's all. Nothing to be scared about. Plus you will be wearign a robe the entire time so you don't feel overly exposed. But keep in mind, this is their job-- they see vaginas every day of every week that they work. Don't wait until somethign goes wrong...prevention is key.

Whether you are or aren't active, you should see your gynecologist
at least once a year for a check up. In fact, you should've started doing this when you got your first period. Yes they do insert an instrument, and it doesn't hurt. Its more embarrassing than anything, just because its so personal. Besides, you don't have to be sexually active to get cervical cancer.

They do stick utensils into your vagina, and it does hurt a lil. However, active or not, you should be seen for paps and any other concerns.
My advice is to ask your doc to show you the instruments used and explain the entire process before hand. Most times if they know you are in active they will try to be a lil more gentle.
There is no reason to be scared. Something else that may help is have a good friend or maybe your sis or whoever that you trust go with you.

As a 40 year old woman who also happens to be a mother, I can tell you your older sister is absolutely correct! The exam is not terrible (don't listen to anyone's horror stories) and can be made most comfortable by explaining to the doctor that you aren't sexually active and that this is the first exam you've had. They are patient and will help you through the process. Do not wait to do this, it truly is an important part of your regular health care.

I promise you it does not hurt! It's very uncomfortable having someone look at you down there, but it's very important to go to the gyno! My mother took me when I was about 18 and I was not sexually active yet. Wouldn't you hate to be ill because of something that could of been easily prevented?

Girls who aren't sexually active don't have to go to a gyno until they are 21 (unless they are having problems).

In that case they will only insert a smaller speculum and a cotton swab to pick the cells up.
