I just recently lost my virginity and it was during my period. I was kind of worried because I'm not on the pill but we used a condom to be safe. I read somewhere that you should check the condom for holes by filling it with water so I did that also. I talked with my mom and I suggested the pill, but neither she nor my boyfriend think it's a good idea because of the incresed risk of cervical cancer. I've already been tested and so has he so STDs are not a concern. I want to make sure I can have the safest sex possible without worrying constantly about risks. Does anyone have any other advice for me?

take birth control and use condoms, that way you are both safe. Why risk getting pregnant over a slim chance of cancer, I mean you probablly smoke or do something else that can cause cancer anyway i would not want to bring a child in this world for no reason, The other thing is if you just go on the pill and your boytoy starts putting his willie in other people you are at a high risk of std's so to be safe make him wrap it and you pop the pills.

The pill has a very low risk of cervical cancer, and the benefits definitely outweigh the costs. If cervical cancer (or any other cancers) run in your family, then of course that increases your risks. THere are so many other birth control methods out there though, such as the patch, the shot, and a lot more. There's also the Intrauterine Device (IUD), and the "ring". You should talk to a gynecologist about your options, and they are trained the likelihood of the risks, moreso than your mother is (unless she's a gynecologist).

There are millions of women on birth control today, and I know that they are not walking around with cancer just because they took the pill. You may still want to use condoms to lower the risk of STDs, as birth control does not provide that protection. Check out the link I provided for some information.

Well the safest without birth control would be a condom. The are less side effects then risks with birht control. And they dont casue cervical cancer it is the HPV Virus...I know I had it turned into cervical cancer. But all is good now. But if you think that then everything youeat or drinks causes cancer. You cant live your lief worring about that all the time. If you did you would never leave the house or anything. Just use a condom. Also to be safe withthat you can use a spermicide. Ask your doc or even a pharmasist about that stuff.

The best person to ask would be your doctor or gynocologist. He/she will be able to advise you on levels of risks vs. protection.

For example, do you know the rate of cervical cancer in the population? If the pill raises the rate from 2 cases per 1000 to 3 cases per 1000, that's a pretty small risk to take. If it goes from 10 cases per 1000 to 150 cases, then you might want to avoid it. And I don't know the true rates, I'm only using these as an example.

And don't worry about shocking the doctor - they've seen it all.

You and your mom should both go talk to your doctor about birth control. Yes the risk of cervical cancer increases with use of the pill but very, very slightly. (10 in 1000 instead of 9 in 1000). http://www.cancerhelp.org.uk/help/default.asp?page=5482
Some doctors believe the increase is due to women being on the pill are more likely to be sexually active. The increase also has more to do with long term use, age and smoking. The pill also reduces the risk of other cancers. The pill has been used for a long, long time, by many women and is the safest, easiest and most reliable form of birth control. With regular check ups (pap tests) it is perfectly safe to use. It's great you can talk to your mom about it, now it's time for both of you to talk to your doctor.

isnt there only increased risk of cervical cancer if you smoke while on birth control? unless your mom and boyfriend are doctors dont take their advice on the pill, talk to your doc instead. if youre still wary of the pill try spermacide with the condom.

either stop having sex until you want to get pregnant or get on birth control. condoms can break, it's not worth the risk.
