Smart girl. Be prepared to feel awkward. They will ask you to undress and give you one of those useless paper thingies that cover nothing. Then they will hopefully knock before they enter back into the room. The doctor will have a nurse present. If there is no nurse with him, get outta there! If the nurse is with him, then everything is legit. Usually the doctor will start with the breast exam. Once that's done he will go on to the internal exam. RELAX. If you are tense it will be more uncomfortable and will take longer. Doc will use some kind of lubricant to insert some type of instrument that makes it easier for him to do the exam(DISCOMFORT...NO PAIN). He will use an extra long Q-Tip to get a tissue sample from in there. Then he will use his hand to feel around for abnormalities. Then, not always, for extra fun you will get the rectal exam. Altogether, it should take between 7 and 10 minutes from the minute the doctor enters the room to saying good-bye, have a nice day. Good luck. Welcome to womanhood!

Well, she will ask you A LOT of routine questions... stuff like at what age did you get your period, is your period normal, are you on any medication, are your bowel movements normal, etc.
You will need to take everything off and put on the robe. She will do a breast exam on each breast--this is fast and it doesn't feel unusual. Then she will exam your vagina by inserting a finger or two to check if your ovaries are ok... while doing this, she will press down on your stomach and ask if it hurts. This is not painful, may feel weird if you're not used to having fingers in there but keep in mind she does this several times a day, every day since she got out of med school lol. She will also give you a pap smear... To do that she will need to have your vagina open so she will hold it open with this object called a speculum-- it may feel a bit cold if it is metal but now they usually have plastic ones. Then she will insert a long q-tip in your vagina. You will feel a slight pinch at most. And that's it!
Then she will ask you if you want birth control since you are sexually active and a bunch of other routine questions.
At some gyno offices, before you see the doctor they ask you to pee in a cup--- they do that so they know if a patient is pregnant before they do any routine work.

Best to be relaxed and open. It is YOUR BODY and you need to take care of it so take advantage of one on one time with your doctor to take care of yourself. It will be like going to the regular doctor when they ask you about your medical history but this time a bit more detailed (i.e. any pregnancies, on birth control, etc.) When they do the examination part (PAP SMEAR) it is a bit uncomfortable but just try and relax, close your eyes and think about something pleasant - something that you really enjoy. The more tense you are the worse it is. If you are seeing a male doctor make sure you have a nurse in there as well. The doctor will probably examen your breasts as well- quick though. It is all pretty quick...Good luck

tell them it is your first visit for sure... another good tip is to ask your friends how they feel about their docs- a referral is always a great way to go, but be prepared to feel fairly uncomfortable. the more relaxed you are the easier the exam will be so try to keep most of your day open, no rushing or stressing. I know that after my first exam I actually felt pretty good emotionally- having a check-up can be very reassuring no matter how careful you are

let the nurse know that it's your first time-she might help it go easier. my first time the nurse got out smaller tools so it wouldn't bother me so much. they use this tool (don't know the name) they put it inside and open it(helps keep you open while dr. works) u might feel a little pressure. it isn't that bad. dr. might ask if u want birth control.
