It depends upon the basement. If the basement is dark, damp, poorly vented, poorly heated then it is not suitable.

On the other hand, if the basement is well ventilated, well heated, nicely finished, and it has decent fire exits (large windows will do this job nicely) it can be and often is added living space. Some have their own entry door from the outside and this can be even nicer.

It is not unusual to have someone in the basement if it is suitable as I mentioned.

Yes, decent people can live in a basement...its not necessarily maybe their "proudest" moment or set out to brag about it, however from time to time its necessary. There are many different reasons why and I think that would determine whether or not this person is decent. I am 28 and lived in my mothers basement (and mother in laws' basement) for a few months at a time so that my husband and I could get on our feet. We had 2 children and it was necessary. We weren't terribly excited over the idea, but it was something that we had to do in order to take care of or family. Single men or woman might do the same...I would never judge someone on where they live, so as long as its not taking advantage of someone, trying to escape responsibilities, (or the governtment LOL). MAny people in our country litterally use their basement as a source of income if renting to other people as well. As long as its a finnished basement (which means they have put up walls a ceiling, some might have a kitchen and even bathroom) Its another room for people to use as something other than a junk room or storage room. Don't judge him on where he lives, base your oppinion on who is is as a person. If hes' decent, then you'll know it. Good Luck

Serious answer here. YES people in the US do live in basements. Infact everyone I know that has a basement has what is called a completed basement. My basement has 2 bedrooms, a living room , a bathroom, and a FULL kitchen ,dining room, seperate laundry area w a full sized washer and dryer as well as a storage area. My 16 yr old and 17yr old nephews reside in mine and they are decent. There are even things called basement apartments and some that have walk out basements.

Decent people however that are old enough to hold jobs and be engaged to ppl over seas pay rent to the parents for allowing them a place to reside.

Yes, if the basement is what's called a "finished basement", which means it's more like a separate room. You wouldn't want to live in an unfinished basement, which would mean nothing but concrete walls and floors. Finished basements have carpeting, insulation, etc.

I actually miss basements from the midwest, since they're so much cooler in the summertime. Out in Arizona where I live now, basements are much harder to come by. Since the earth is rockier out here, and thus harder to excavate for basements, you rarely see them. Or, if you do, they add a significant premium onto the selling price of the home -- upwards of $25-30k.

Yes we actually do live in our basements here in the US....even if we do not sleep in them, or have a kitchen in them, it is a favorite area to remodel in to "family rooms", or "game rooms".

Many of the homes built here in the US are now built with "walk-out" basements...usually with a sliding door. A "walk-out" basement usually has the home sitting with the first floor at ground level, but the ground slopes away towards the back, leaving the basement at a level "walk out" area also. There will be steps inside the home, of course, but outside the home, both the first floor, and the basement are at 'ground level' because of the land being sloped down, from the front to the back.

Now -- having said all that-- The home probably belongs to his parents. My advice would be to find a new home for yourselves. It just makes life much easier, and family relations much less strained, hehehe... if each family has its own home. The only good reason I can see for you and your husband (to be) to remain in the same home with his parents would be if his parents needed someone on-site, for help doing daily tasks. (I dont think living at home with the parents is good just because it is cheaper)

Congrats and Good Luck :)

Plenty of basements have spare rooms and even bathrooms, that make them perfectly acceptable living quarters. Some basements even have kitchens and kitchenettes to make for separate living.
It is perfectly normal for someone to live in a basement, but the questions is WHY does he still live in the basement? How old is he? Does he have a good paying job? Can he afford a place of his own?

Some people turn finished basements into apartments, family rooms. People live in some of them.

Sure they do, you can finish up a basement with walls/paint/carpet etc. and make it just like any other room in the house.

Why is it that you have been with this guy long enough to become angaged to him but you are just now concerned with his living situation? If it was really a problem wouldn't it have come up sooner?

In America a lot of times we fix our basement up and put carpeting and couches and televisions and pool tables down there and kind of have a tv/game room. I'm assuming your fiance is living in a redone basement and has a bed, couch, dresser, etc..... you never know tho...

Many houses in the USA have "finished" basements...they are carpeted, painted or paneled, and are considered another level of the home.
Its not at all uncommon to use it as living space.
