My church is replacing the hardwood chips under the playground and wants to use the rubber tire mulch. We can't seem to find anyone here in town who uses it, so we don't know if people who have it like it. Does anyone out there have the rubber tire mulch where kids play? Does it hold up to it? Do the kids like it better? How many inches deep is yours?

This would help out a lot for our church. Thank you.

I work at a large Catholic Church. We have a Daycare.
We have the playground covered in this material. It works well but easily scattered by the children. We have a border around the area and it still gets scattered. We had "pea gravel" it was horrible. We have another playground that has the wood chips. Works well except under the swings. Constantly raking it the chips back in place.

I am a student of a school that goes to camp every year. For the rock climbing wall, they have rubber tire mulch. It is about 1/2-1 inch deep. Hope it helps. It also is mych more comfortable than wood chips and I like it.

The school district in my area has used these for about 3 years in the elementary school playground. It has replaced the gravel, wood mulch, pecan shells, and related matter.

They put about 2 inches of the rubber shred on top of a plastic liner that is perforated to drain water.

a local playground uses rubber mulch (presumably from recycled tires.) it is very cushioning for falls and slips but it can cause trouble if children gather the chips and either throw/dump them on each other or spread them out of the enclosed area. the playground is sunk maybe 10-14 inches below the level of the sidewalk and the mulch is relatively deep. i would recommend using this material as it is relaively inexpensive, effective, and environmentally-friendly.
