I have read somewhere that John Kerry is the most liberal Democrat in the senate, and John Edwards is named as the fourth most liberal. Is this true?? If this is the case, how could two senators who are so dangerously left manage to win the Democratic nomination in '04? And, if they were in control today, how would the US be different?

Well, it depends on who is doing the rating. A lot of organizations do, both from the left and from the right, and they usually have different people on top. It depends on what issues they select to do the rating with.

As for how the US would be different, the Iraq Occupation would be over. The deficit would be smaller. The Supreme Court wouldn't be dominated by right-wing Judicial Activists.

This points out the problem with how the major parties pick their candidate: The Democrats pick the most liberal candidate that they feel is electable. The Republicans pick the most conservative candidate that they feel is electable. Then those two candidates attempt to fight over the more moderate electorate.

The problem is that the extreme choices for President leave people say "Well I like how this guy stands on this and this but, his stance on that is really troubling" Then you get to needing to choose between the lesser of two evils and are forces to settle for a candidate as opposed to feeling they can get behind a candidate

Would his presidency been different? Yes. Would it be better. That's open to debate.

Liberals control the Base. They want candidates who vote Liberal but act moderate. It's very difficult to get away with this for a complete election cycle.

depends what you mean by liberal, but i doubt the most liberal or conservative in anything can get presidential nomination. they usually get moderate politicians because they can appeal to voters who are middle of the road.

I would say Ted Kennedy is 2nd. And liberal is not bad unless you are a extreme right-wing psycho and listen to Rush everyday.
