That will depend on the batter at hand and how well he handles those pitches.

A slider down and away is something I would chose if I didn't know the batter.

It differs with all pitchers. Some pitchers have a better curveball than a fastball and still others will use some other pitch as their strikeout pitch. Why would a pitcher like Joel Zumaya try to get you out with a curveball when he can throw a fastball by you at 103mph. It really depends on the individual pitcher.

I think both are equal. When thrown by someone who has specialized in that pitch they both can be devastating. I watched Carlos Marmol of the Cubs throw a slider that was 6 inches inside and the batter swung for an outside pitch. Watch Barry Zito throw a curve and watch a left handed batter duck as the pitch hits the outside corner. Both pitches can make a hitter look foolish at any time when thrown right. I really can't make a distinction on which is better.

Yea, it definately depends on who's throwing the pitch... Any hitter would tell you they wouldn't want anything to do with a Darryl Kile curve (which had AMAZING break) or a Brad Lidge Slider when he's going good (that pitch can screw the batter into the ground trying to hit it).

But here's a point to think about: If the slider misses, the hitter can usually do more with it.... If a curve ball misses, you have a 50-50 chance....if it hangs you can put it in the bleachers and on the scoreboard...if it goes low into the strike zone, you can't really do much with it.

Strikeout Pitch

A lefty vs lefty match up: the duece is the best pitch to throw. It comes across so much different than lefties are used to that it is very difficult to make contact on. The slider is effective if the pitcher is more of a side-arm style because they batter is usually fooled to think that the pitch is closer to the plate when it is really way outside the zone.

Basically it all depends on the style of a pitcher and how effective one can throw it.

that would depend on the movement of the pitch, but I'd have to say the Slider. Steve Carlton is the NL leader in Strikeout and he throw a great slider

It would depend on how you set the batter up
If you just threw some junk fastballs for balls, you could fool the batter with a curve. If you just threw 4 curves, throwing another might not be a good idea.
Obviously, though, the gyro ball is the best pitch.

Which ever one the pitcher has more confidence in given the game situation. But more importantly, it should be the pitch that the batter has the most difficulty with according to the scouting report.
