the formula for finding the length of diagonal line is
A^2+B^2=C^2 where C is the diagonal line
5*5+5*5=B^2
you can do the rest

use pythagoras theorem
(hypotenuse)^2 = a+2 +b^2
where a and b r the other sides of a right triangle.
hypotenuse here is the diagonal of the square
so(diagonal)^2 =5^2 +5^2
(diagonal)^=50
so diagonal = square root of 50

Use the pythagorean theorem
leg^2 + leg^2= hypotenuse^2
5^2 + 5^2 = hypotenuse^2
25+25= hypotenuse^2
50= hypotenuse^2
hypotenuse= square root of 50

C**************D
AD is the diagonal.. Given AB = BD = AC = CD = 5 cm
triangle ACD will form a right triangle.. because Angle C is 90 as it is given as square.
We need to use the pythagorean theorem which states hypotenuse square is sum of squares of the legs
if you consider the right triangle ACD, AD is the hypotenuse and Legs are AC and CD.. so we have
AD^2 = 5^2 + 5^2
AD^2 = 25 + 25 = 50
Taking square root on both sides we get
AD = square root (50) ...
Here we take AD = y..
so y = square root (50)
hope this helps.

A square what?
Pythagoras: diagnal equals 25 + 25
therefore equals square root of 50 = "work the rest out for yourself?"

The diagonal d of a square with side s is d=s*sqrt(2). You should remember this to save time.
So inyour case d = 5sqrt(2)
= sqrt(25)*sqrt(2) = sqrt(50)

by pythagorean theorem
c^2=a^2+b^2
since a=b because it is a square
c^2=2(5)^2=50
c=square root of (50)
