Convert them both into sixths. 1/2 = 3/6, and 2/3 = 4/6. 4 is bigger than 3, so 2/3 is bigger than 1/2.

Put each in the same denominator to compare:

1/2 (multiply by 3/3 to get a common denominator of 6)
= 3/6

2/3 (multiply by 2/2 to get a common denominator of 6)
= 4/6

So 2/3 is bigger.

1. calculator
press 1
press /
press 2
press =
display: 0.5

do the same for 2/3, you get 0.666667
so 1/2 is not bigger than 2/3

2. 2nd way
1/2 = 1/2 * 3/3 = 3/6
2/3 = 2/3 * 2/2 = 4/6

since 3/6 is smaller than 4/6, so 1/2 is smaller than 2/3

Here's a way you could easily show her that 2/3 is larger than 1/2:

Cut two pieces of string at an equal length. Fold one string and cut it in half, and show her how there are two equal pieces.

Cut the other string into three equal parts. Separate two parts from the single part, and place them end to end. She'll see that although one third is indeed smaller than one half, TWO thirds is larger.

No. 1/2 is 50% while 2/3 is 66 2/3%.
2/3 is bigger than 1/2 by 1/6 or 16.66 2/3%.

look at a pizza pie. One half is half the pie. Now cut the pizza pie into three equally sized pieces. Take one away (now you have 2/3 of a pie). It is clear that 2/3 is bigger than 1/2.

Of course, 2/3 is bigger than 1/2. Use a pie graph to explain why. Draw one pie cut in half, with one half shaded in. Draw another cut into thirds, with two thirds shaded in. It will be obvious.

2/3 is bigger than 1/2, draw a pie or a square or any shape and shade in those areas and you will see.

2 of anything is always bigger than 1 of anything.
