I need some help. I want to know what NASA does for the average American that's so beneficial. They are funded by the governemnt as far as I know and I think it's a huge waste of taxpayer's money. Please don't misunderstand me. I love space and I have ALWAYS been fascinated by it. But for a bunch of so-called genius astrophysicists to sit around and get paid all kinds of money when they can barely send people up to space and bring them back witout killing them is just insane to me. Let's not even talk about the fact that the space crafts break apart on take off and have to be repaired before the astronauts come back or all the "space junk" that's been launched and is having adverse effects in space.
Someone help! What is the point of NASA...can't we do without it and put the money towards something better like hunger and homelessness? It's expensive and we need to worry about taking care of planet Earth more than anything.

Hey there, I could agree with u 100% and yes we could do better things other than sending metal and junk in space. In the bible it says that outside of the world was meant not to be discovered. We r likely getting God upset because man wishes to discover uncharted regions, in earth yes but out in space, hell noooooo!
I am hoping that Nasa will discontinue to spend so much money on useless things and help out with the world's serious problems. Instead of finding new things to discover, we just happen to discover that we r destroying our own fate as far as destroying the Ozone layer. Keep it up girlll and spread the word.....

While I agree with your general premise, that NASA does not seem to provide a benefit to the 'average' American, you have to look at the big picture. Although I don't propose to eliminate NASA completely, I would agree that their budget could be redirected to areas that are of more direct benefit.

The gains made by NASA have touch our lives in many unseen ways. Did you know that cell phone technology, microwave ovens, food preservative methods and the like were all pioneered by years of NASA research?

I totally agree!!! If there is "life out there" , you can bet that if it's smarter than we are here on earth, they'll do all of the finding!!!! We do need to focus on saving this planet, rather than trying to leave it!

Why do people always remember the failures and forget the successes?
