A typical polychaete larva is "trochophore larva".
It is transparent, somewhat rhomboidal in shape. It has two girdles of ciliary bands, preoral and post oral. It is a small mouth on one side which opens into the stomach and then it tapers back to open into the anus. This larva swims on the surface of the ocean and feeds on diatoms etc. It undergoes metamorphosis during which the posterior part elongates and becomes metamerically segmented. The larva described above is that of Nereis, the clam worm.
