It's pretentious and stupid. It does nothing to help prevent attacks...actually, it may be damaging. Think about it. How smart is it to publicly announce how prepared for an attack we are? Some time ago, I wrote a rant about it, and created a chart mocking it. I'll link to them...

It’s purely psychological. The public feels that they have some sort of control over the situation. It’s like back in the day of the Cold War, when people were told to hide under a blanket if a nuke hit and they were outside. Everyone knew that a cotton blanket wouldn't help even in the least bit but it was better than telling everyone that if a nuke hit there was really nothing they could do to escape the blast.

That was the exact criticism the US version had before its implementation. The only real use of the terror alert system is to look back on what it was when a terrorist event occurred.

I'm not saying the "terror alert" system is perfect. Its rather transparent to the man on the street, but a lot of its value has to do with things going on behind the scenes...first and second responder issues. So, at least in principle, it makes sense.

I don't really understand it myself. The terror alert should go up when they hear of something and feel it might be real. Not after it happens. Of course the best time for someone to hit us is when we least expect it and have our heads down. Maybe they just wanna be prepared in case it's a bigger blow after the first one. Ya know?

I don't pay much attention to the terror alerts in the States. You should always be on guard, be on the lookout for anything suspicious and call it in to 911 (or whatever your equivalent is) right away. I do not think it's to instill fear. However, I do think it help remind people not to get lazy in their efforts to remain alert.

The fear of god should be the only thing you should be fearing. Live by the ten commandments and you'll do fine. The 10 commandments were written on all of our hearts.

And if there was no alert, then a bomb goes off and the grousing and fingerpointing would never stop. It is a can't win situation for the government.
