(with the exception of some breeders)

What do you think of this?

It definitely interesting. I don't know if/how this will work.

I fix all my pets - I think it's the most responsible thing to do! There are too many strays out there, and all my animals are recovered - so there aren't any pure breds in the lot. But I wonder about forcing people to fix their animals. While I have known irresponsible pet owners, I have also known some who like to do things like breed a beloved pet ONCE when it is getting on in years so they can keep the children of their beloved pet. What will people like them do?

I haven't read the details, and I don't know how enforcement will work, but it could be very interesting.

People are answering your question in regards to PUPPY MILLS-notice folks the asker said "breeders". Sure, there are BYBs and whatnot, but putting them aside, as long as the breeder correctly manages their animals, meaning, does not inbreed, breeds at a proper age, makes sure the animals are healthy, etc. then I have no problems. My family got both of my dogs so far from breeders and they are lovely, healthy, and all around wonderful. Puppy mills (as well as BYBs), if we have to bring them up, are serious issues. Those NEED to be shut down and made illegal. Probably 90% of the animals from Puppy mills ended up with long term medical issues. I have a friend who's cousin bought a dog from a pet SHOP, the dog was an australian shepherd, it's three years old now, and it is only eight pounds and I think is nearly blind- clearly it is a puppy mill dog and have serious problems, along with every puppymill dog. I do think that shelters should be a priority when considering getting a pet- I work at a cat shelter and I urge whoever I can to adopt rather get their dog/cat from a breeder. Spaying and neutering is crucial. The lack of spaying and neutering is what causes these poor animals to put in shelters in the first place. People think "Oh! How cute! Kittens!" the kittens grow into cats, the person doesn't think they're cute anymore, and then they're dumped on the doorstep of a shelter. Then the process repeats.

I think it's a good idea, as long as there are low cost spay/neuter clinics available for people who can't afford it themselves. My local shelter has a program like this. If you qualify, you can get cats, dogs, and rabbits spayed/neutered for only $30. That's super cheap!

I know a lot of people who like having cats but don't think they are worth the money to spay/neuter. They often have "accidental" litters because they're also inside/outside cats. Where do all these kittens go? Either straight to the overcrowded shelter or they take up homes that would have otherwise adopted from the shelter. Some people do this with their dogs too. It's sick. Animals are being euthanized and they're too cheap and heartless to stop it.

I hope WI gets a spay/neuter law!

It's a bunch of BS headed up by the HSUS and PETA. If this bill passes CA will soon not have ANY pets allowed. PETA freaks have inflated numbers of dogs PTS and continually come up with bogus laws that resemble communism. This bill will hurt many people. Responsible pet owners, show hobby breeders, any and all retailers who sell pet products, hotels, restaraunts etc will also be harmed because there will be no more dog shows.. You have to read the entire bill to get a grasp on the riduclous rules they want to impose.
They say it will save tax payers money but in the long run it will cost MUCH more then the supposed 3 million because all the workers it wil take to enforce these laws are not going to be free.
There is legislative alerts daily on the AKC website not only for this bill but many others in many other states. People need to stand up and fight for their rights or risk never being able to own a pet.
I can tell you omething else... All the back yard breeders and puppy mills who frequent this site with their ignorant breeding questions are highly to blame. There is some friggin idiot on every corner owning irresponsibly and breeding their pets for profits and many of these dogs get dumped into shelters or into the hands of more ignorance.
The solution is education.. not rules and laws that effect EVERYONE as if we are all ignorant. I get so sick of all the questions on this site about When will my pups be due? how much money should I charge for my designer mutts? My dog is sick and pregnant and I have no money... etc. This is the reason far fetched laws are a threat to all. Stupid people suck.

While I firmly believe in spaying and neutering, and all my pets are spayed and neutered, and while I hate the thought of BYB and puppy mills and "designer dogs", I think making it a law is going a little too far. Another case of "big brother is watching".

I think it's a great idea because pet overpopulation has become a serious issue in the US.

It depends on the owner - If the owner isn't planning on having puppies then they should spay/neuter their pet.. If they don't spay/neuter their pet and the animal becomes pregnant, fine the owner.

I think the nation should be considering this. There are way too many stray, and homeless pets out there. If owners don't start doing something about this then the government is going to have to try.

BRILLIANT!!

There are so many animals destroyed because the shelters are so overcrowded with unwanted pets. That, to me is absolutely horrifying!
