Lineage is the line of descendants. Like your family tree kind of a thing. But he could have been referencing forefathers of football rather than actuall family lineage. It's where you came from...or rather...who preceeded you.

They're talking about coaching relationships between coaches in the same system. People often talk about the Parcells coaching tree, coaches who at one time worked for Parcells and now coach in similar systems. His tree includes:
* Bill Belichick, New England Patriots
* Tom Coughlin, New York Giants
* Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints
* Romeo Crennel, Cleveland Browns
* Eric Mangini, New York Jets
* Al Groh, University of Virginia
* Charlie Weis, University of Notre Dame

Mike Holmgren and Bill Walsh have similar coaching trees.

Decendents, ancestors, geneology...etc...In football, it is either coaching lineage or player lineage...and in coaching, it usually refers to coaching mentors(as say, Bill Belichick is to many younger coaches, such as Eric Mangini of the Jets or Romeo Crennel of the Browns)...When it refers to players, it is usually referring to their God-given athletic ability...their genes, etc...
