"The Guns of Navarone" was a novel by Allistair MacClain. It is fiction. But it made a good movie.

They were fictional, from the 1957 novel by Alistair MacLean.

Guns were fortified inside of mountains in both World Wars. the poor performance of British Battleships in their First World War battles with Turkish Forts, which led to the disastrous landings at Gallipoli, is probably what gave MacLean the idea.
