Well, here is how I see it. I was raised by a conservative dad and a liberal mom who have been happily married for 40 years. We always talked politics at home, but the conversations were (and still are) always in an environment of open-mindedness, respect and civility. There is the understanding that every one has the right to their own opinion, and that it is OK if we don't agree as long as we treat each other respectfully.
My dad's views made more sense to me, and I am generally conservative. My mom's views made more sense to my sister, and she is generally liberal. She is also my best friend, and we discuss politics all the time! Another of my best friends is libertarian. Again, fantastic political conversations all the time. But with respect. That's what it comes down to for me, and that's what some in this forum lack.
Hugs to you for another great question! ;-)

Getting along is something that is not for all issues. If all people agree on everything and get along on all issues, we are bound to make some bad decisions. However, on many issues, both parties should be able to find the middle ground that everybody agrees upon. This country was based around debates between two contrasting point of views and the compromises between them. What people today need to realize in order to get along, is that compromising and bipartisanship isn't making your point of view known and criticizing your opponents for not supporting it. Compromising is both sides respecting the opposite side's opinion, combining the main ideas, and giving and taking some ground on the small details. And that's how all parties can get along.

Sure, dear. And that means everyone picks on the dreaded "neocons" today? Because I'm not really into picking out a group for continual attack.
But I am for free speech.

Yes, if we learn to respect others ideas and realize that we all can learn from each other and nobody is purely right and purely wrong.
