They get shots when they are born, but you still need to do the follow-up series of shots. Make sure when you buy a petco ferret that you look at there eyes, nose and ears. If you notice any kind of mucus or liquid don't buy it or any of the litter there. I worked there in the small animal department and they come in ill all the time. If I was you and you Haven't bought one yet or you are thinking of buying one don't buy it from Petco.

They come with their initial shots - canine distemper and rabies - but they still need their booster shots for them to work properly. They should also be tested for ADV which it unfortunately a very common illness in all ferrets. If it tests positive, there is nothing you can do but different medications are available to keep them healthy longer. Also, knowing your ferret is ADV+ means that you will know not to touch other peoples ferrets (it can transmit that easily) The only way to fight ADV is knowing and preventing the spread of it.
Also, many ferrets in stores have upper respiratory infections. Dont buy a ferret that has goopy eyes or a runny nose and sneezing. Petco is the last place Id reccommend buying from unless the one in your area is particularly nice. The one down the street from me knows nothing about these animals and had even told a costomer that they were rodents and required no more care than a hamster! They also never clean the enclosure which opens them up to many illnesses. On the other hand, if I drive 45 minutes, another petco is very clean and the employees are well educated.
I myself work at a privately owned pet store thats even bigger than petco. Our ferrets come from the same place, but they are handled every day and taught not to bite from the first day they arrive. They are also cleaned at least 5 times a day and given many toys to play with. If they are sick, we fix them. Petco's policy is to just put them in a back room for them to die. We have a vet that comes in to care for all our animals!
My 3 boys came from a ferret shelter in Hartford, Ct. There are ferret shelters all over the place and I highly recommend obtaining a fert from one of these places. You can get a kit if you want to start out with a baby or you can get an adult who is already trained and find one that has the personality you want!
So shop around a bit before settling on the ferret from the most convenient place.

Anytime you get a ferret from anywhere, taking it to the vet within 24hrs is suggested. Ferrets get shots shortly after they are born and require boosters in a few weeks, then annually after that.
Also, talk to your vet, they now have a distemper vaccine specifically for ferrets called fer-vac. We have had Marshalls ferrets and they have been very healthy but any large breeder like that will have some with illness so keepan eye open for signs.
You might check the area for local shelters too.

they comprise their preliminary pictures - canines distemper and rabies - yet they nonetheless choose their booster pictures for them to artwork ideas-blowing. they must additionally be examined for ADV which it regrettably an particularly consumer-friendly ailment in all ferrets. If it tests helpful, there is not any longer something you're able to do yet diverse drugs are obtainable to maintain them healthful longer. additionally, understanding your ferret is ADV+ potential which you will comprehend to no longer touch different peoples ferrets (it may transmit that truly) the only thank you to combat ADV is understanding and combating the unfold of it. additionally, many ferrets in shops have top respiration infections. Dont purchase a ferret that has goopy eyes or a runny nostril and sneezing. Petco is the final place id reccommend paying for from till the only on your section is extraordinarily severe-high quality. the only down the line from me is acquainted with no longer something approximately those animals and had even informed a costomer that they have been rodents and required not greater care than a hamster! additionally they by no potential sparkling the enclosure which opens them as much as many ailments. on the different hand, if I force 40 5 minutes, yet another petco is extremely sparkling and the staff are nicely knowledgeable. i actually artwork at a privately owned puppy save thats even greater desirable than petco. i no theyre altered and descented (i dont no what shots)but plz dont get ferrets from any pet store -get them from a breeder or at least from a shelter. u can get a much better quality ferret from breeders(except from those occasional few) and because of various reasons, ferrets from pet stores(marshall farms, etc) will have a higher risk of getting cancer, other sicknesses, etc when they get older which can sometimes lead to high cost surgeries, medications, etc. so either help out the shelters buy taking one from them or do urslef a favor and get one from a breeder. hope i helped and good luck with ur ferret(s)!
