Someone told me, while they were changing the oil in the car that the petroleum or whatever chemical is used, is bad to breath. So my question is, has it made any long term mechanics out there sick, or did it cause their health to go bad?

Some day in the near future the environmentalists will regard a longer list of toxic gas items to their list. Since motor oil isn't as gaseous as other more liquid petroleum products such a toluene, acetone, thychlorithane (SP), gasoline, paint thinner and starting fluid. I think it would be down this list somewhat. I was told long ago in our metallurgical lab at work that petroleum products that dry on your hands suddenly are toxic and can cause cancer. Lately I've noticed mechanics whearing neoprene gloves during oil changes, a practice we all should be doing.

I have not heard of specific cases of people getting sick because of motor oil contamination but suddenly, that all may change. Till then if you are correct consumers should stop using Vaseline, makeup, lipstick, eyeshadow, Vicks, and other petroleum based products.

whoever told you that has no brains at all, no you can not get sick from breathing the air when you change the oil, you can if you swallow some while doing it though but only to the point of losing your lunch and feeling real cr**py afterwards trust me I know. AND THIS IS FOR THE ONE NAMED SHELCOM you are full of it!!!!! you can not die from oil fumes when you said about dieing from being in a closed room with a car. you are breathing in the carbon dioxide from the exhaust if you did not know this maybe you should either go back to school or watch what you say because you have NO CLUE at all!!!!!!!!!!!

No petroleum product is good to breathe. The hydrocarbon chains are attracted to blood, so less oxygen can be carried in the bloodstream. Thats why people die by being in a closed room with an engine running, they literally suffocate. Long term exposure can affect the brain and lungs.

on account that I ought to pick between those autos, i might pick the accord. i might recommend perchance a Ford Fusion or a Chevy Cobalt. The cylinders provide a coarse estimate on the capability of the vehicle. A 4 cylinder has much less capability than a 6, in spite of the undeniable fact that it has extra constructive gas mileage. To get a independent opinion try staring at a client comments magazine on autos. they must nevertheless be out now for used and new fashions.

not true. individually the additives MIGHT be toxic in large quantities, but when blended with oil, and then run through an engine, they are kept in suspension and out of the atmosphere.
