I had an outstanding interview Monday, after which I sent a thank you e-mail. The interviewer called me today to let me know they would be making a decision by the close of business next Monday. Should I send her another email thanking her for the update or would that be excessive? I was going to send something short and sweet.

that would be excessive. The only thank you that is "required by postal mail" (for etiquette purposes) is the thank you for a nice interview and yes I'd like the job. It's done by a nice card thru the post office so that that person has it in front of them at all times to remember who you are. Emails are pfffft and don't stay in front of a person so although nice and do say what you want, they don't meet the purpose of fine etiquette, and I suspect that's why you're not sure if you should re-write or not. If you sent it by postal mail you'd have been more confident.
