I have gone into device manager and it recognises it as 'serial bus mass storage device' so it is on my pc but I just cant access it. can any body help ??

Has the drive within the caddy been formatted ? If not you need to do so.

Right click "My Computer" select "manage" go to the "local disk manager"
Locate the correct disk in the list, it will probably show as unallocated space / raw disk.

If it's IS formatted you will simply need to right click it in the lower window and select "change/assign letter"
If NOT formatted select "Format" MAKE SURE THIS IS THE RIGHT DRIVE or you will LOSE DATA
