I see so many people smoke right over top of infants and children and they don't seem to care about the effects this has on other's health. I even know of people who use nebulizers for their asthmatic children and still smoke around them! It seems like cigarette smokers are the most selfish of all addicts. My mom used to smoke when I was achild but as soon as she found out the effects the smoke had she stopped and did not allow anyone to smoke around me! I really don't understand!??!

yeah, SOME...or rather..MANY... the negative comments just prove my point. how can anyone say that these are generalizations and streotypes? If you don't live under a rock then you know that this is very very true.

I stopped going out to dinner with a girl that smoked as soon as she stopped eating even if others were still eating. Of course this was years ago when you could still smoke in restaurants. I thought it very rude of her. Other smokers that I knew did not do this until after dinner and then asked "do you mind if I smoke?". She had no clue why no one would go out to dinner with her anymore. We let her stew in her ignorance.
Did you ever see the photo of the pregnant woman smoking a cigarette and the writing underneath stated she was upset with something or other outside her home that she thought would harm her baby? Some kind of construction or something. Really pathetic.
SOME - NOT ALL SMOKERS - are just plain ignorant and SOME are just plain selfish. They could care less. Children and pets are affected but they don't care one whit. All they care about is sucking up the cancer into their lungs and if others get sick, what do they care.
Please note I capitalized SOME because a lot of people cannot read that word when written in small letters and get their knickers in a twist and get all defensive.

I smoke, but I am considerate to others I don't smoke around my kids..If I am at my kids's baseball game I always go at least 100 feet away from the people on the bleachers, where no one is around.I do have to say that i'm a little offended by you saying cigarette smokers are the most selfish of all addicts. I'm divorcing my husband after 11yrs or his meth/crack/coke/pot/beer addictions and HIS addictions have been way more selfish and dangerous to me and my kids than me having a cigarette..Tell me...when was the last time a person that only had a cigarette beat you, choked you until you passed out, held a knife to your throat in front of your son that was 8 yrs old at the time, or thrown a knife at you pregnant belly when you where 8 months pregnant? Wanna talk about selfish addiction huh? How about him spending all his money on drugs instead of giving me a dime for child support. Or deciding one his one day a week to visit his kids is too much of a hassle, because I made it for a Staurday evening and there was a party. Hell ...I wouldn't even smoke if I hadn't had to live so many years with a truely selfish addict! Trust me Dear, there are alot more addictions out there that lead people to kill/murder others way quicker and more violently than a cigarette ever would.

I am a smoker, and you have generalized yet left your mother out of the picture. I have never smoked around kids nor do I smoke inside homes. Your mother may not have smoked around her own child but how do u know she has never done it around someone else's.. And it's should not be don't smoke around children, it's don't smoke around people who don't.
Now on the other hand, there are some very selfish non-smokers who think it's their right to go where smokers usually are (like bars) and hang out in that section while expecting the smokers to consider them and not smoke while they are there... Guess what the world is made up of humans that will never think alike or do alike, but the least we all expect is some compromise... I have compromised by only smoking where I am allowed by law, why don't the non-smokers do the same by not going in our areas and not smoke then cause issues... IT GOES BOTH WAYS.

Way to generalize there honey, trying to paint a picture of nicotine fiend blowing smoke in a child's face. Not everyone does that, and most smokers will not smoke in front of kids and will ask when around new people if it is ok to smoke. I have the right to smoke and also have enough tact and intelligence on the when and wheres and around whos. If an establishment permits it, I will do it there and no one has a right to complain. No one makes you go out to eat or drink and if its a known smoking place then you shouldnt bring kids there if you dont support that.
I have to put up with crying kids in public, obese people constricting my space on planes and some other general things people do to offend my senses but ya know what?..people have the right to live the way they want. so b i t c h if you must but there are always going to be things that others do that you dont like and will have to deal with. all 6 billion of us dont live life the same, we should all come to grips.

I wouldn't be so quick to accuse all smokers of not caring. I am a very conscientious smoker and I opt not to smoke if there are children around or if there are a bunch of people in close quarters. I think those smokers that are not considerate of others while smoking are probably not very considerate of others in any other instance as well. Don't judge the entire group based on the faults of a few.

I agree with you, I used to work with a woman who smoked during her whole pregnancy. i also had a friend who lost her husband to cancer. She still smokes and she does it in her car with the kids in the back seat. The only thing I can think of is, Cigarettes are highly addictive. I guess the addiction has taken over their judgement. Either that or they just don't want to face the fact that they are doing real harm to others. because if they did face up to it they would have to quit..pure selfishness.

It's a free country. I used to smoke, never in my house or around non-smokers. The people that do as you described drive cars and treat all people the same way.

My husband is 60 years old and he finally quit smoking in January 2007 after 45 years of smoking. We have been married for 27 years and I have begged him to quit because he is killing himself, our son, our dog and me. He never would because he said he didn't care who he kills because he loves to smoke and he loves the taste and the smell.
Now that he quit he says he misses it so much because he loves the taste of it.
I asked a neighbor why he smokes and if he cared about others and he said "smokers has rights too, and if he kills someone with his smoke he doesn't care'
It is the inconsiderate people who smoke.

I don't think it's right to stereotype ALL smokers. I think it's the persons character that needs to be questioned! I know plenty of people who smoke in secluded areas just so that they don't bother anyone else with the smoke.

I find this kind of offensive. I smoke but I will not smoke around non-smokers or my niece and nephew. I happen to care about other people's health and I know how it effects me. You shouldn't be so judgmental. Just because a few people are selfish, doesn't mean we all are.
