Sounds like either the router is not set to give DHCP addresses or the laptop not set to accept a DHCP IP address

Check network properties of the device, under TCP/IP it should list "Obtain address automatically

If you are connecting with a cable, to a router/modem/switch make sure cable is a "patch" not a "crossover" hold ends sidde by side, the order of the coloured cables in the plug should be the same on both

If so, reconnect cable, after the error shows, do START / RUN type CMD hit return
In teh dos box, type IPCONFIG and hit return
If the IP address comes back as a 154.xxx.xxx.xxx address it's NOT taken a DHCP address from the router but is set to TRY to get a DHCP address, check router settings.

If it comes back with a 192.xxx.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx address etc it's more likely the network card is NOT set on correct range to work with the router or router only works with DHCP assigned addresses.

Windows help will talk you through setting and changing IP addresses.

Also worth reating manual / help files for the router / modem to check it's default address range, if it normally uses 192.169.0.1 as it's own, try manually setting PC to 192.169.0.2 and see if it gives proper connectivity.

Good luck

I had the same problem, it got solved when I put the IP on automatic.

You can do it by going onto the connections Properties.
There should be a scroll menu, schoos TCP/IP Settings.
Now put both of those options on automatic and try again.

If the connection still doesn't work or they were already on automatic I have no idea what to do, sorry.

This would take some trouble shooting but a few suggestions;

Turn off any encryption or mac filters on the router and see if that makes a difference. If so then your problem is narrowed down and should be easy to fix.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Start button->Control panel->Network Settings->Right click on the Local Lan connection->Select Properties->Highlight the TCP/IP item->Click Properties button.

In this windows make sure that your network card is set to obtain it's IP address and DNS info automatically. If it's not then make it so.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If none of this works try running this tool: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html. This will fix your TCP/IP protocol.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You can try uninstalling the card from your hardware manager and then scanning for hardware changes and letting it re-install.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Check the manufacturer's website and see if there is an updated driver.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Try a new network cable or a different port on your router.

on the task bar (the one with the start button) there should be a computer monitor with 2 curved lines to the right of it. double click on that. you should find a button that says REPAIR...click that and it should work fine after it does its thing.

YOUR NOT IN RANGE OF A WIRELESS ROUTER. MOVE CLOSER TO THE ROUTER. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A ROUTER, YOU NEED TO GET ONE TO GO WITH YOUR HIGH SPEED INTERNET. I'LL NEED MORE INFO FROM YOU TO BETTER ANSWER THE QUESTION.
