How much ram do you have. Look on your taskbar how many things are open by you clock in the lower right hand side? Everything you see there is running in the back ground. Try shutting some of them down.

I agree with the earlier posts about traffic but I am curious if you have noticed a steady increase in the problem? If so it would be a great idea to check your computer for spyware. This will sit in your system and run in the background when you have an active internet connection. These added processes will not only slow your pc down but they can be quiet dangerous, especially if you use online banking or sites such as ebay or paypal. There are many free programmes that you can use to find and remove spyware from your system, I would recommend ad-aware, it is good and easy to use.

Slowness on the Internet is usually a sign that you have some type of a spyware/adware program running in the background unsing up your Internet bandwidth.

Begin by going to http://download.com and getting a good anti-spyware program. My personal favorite is Spybot Seek&Destroy. Run it and see how many "spywares" it finds and cleans.

I was having a similar problem, and the culprit was the Windows Live toolbar in IE7. If you have it installed, try uninstalling it to see if it this helps. You uninstall this one via the Add/Remove Programs option in the Control Panel.

Go to "Tools", "Internet Options", "general tab", & delete the temporary files (& cookies if you want to.....although this may cause some sites to ask you for your passwords, etc as the passwords will be cleared from the memory & the sites won't recognise you).
Good luck!
