Shortwave radios come in two basics flavors.
Portables - for occasional use , camping etc.
Desktop - for serious long distance reception.
Now Radio Shack sells some cheap portables , but these are often poor performers.
Therefore many people don't have a good experience with them so they don't pursue shortwave very much., and often give up due to the poor reception.
On the other hand , desktop receivers are often made by the same companies that make ham radio or two way radio gear.
These work extremely well and give great reception but cost quite a lot of money.
also they are often only sold by authorized dealers of that particular brand , so you would not see them at Walmart/Kmart etc.
Shortwave is alive and well , and is actually the only method of international broadcasting that is reliable in emergencies.

Shortwave broadcast listening is not as popular in the US as local AM/FM radio. You can buy any brand of shortwave radio on the internet. There are plenty of domestic dealers in these radios on the net.
I believe the sharper image stores carry sw radios. Brookstone maybe. Others I am not sure

i've got been a typical listener to English language short wave radio on account that 1949. for the time of that complete time i've got been an aural witness to the important activities of historic previous. My decision of QSL taking part in cards from distinctive station responding to my reception comments isn't very super. yet, my correspondence report with letters decrease to and fro with those stations is amazingly super. even however I stay in what ought to be seen the fourth or 5th ultimate reception element in inland North u . s . a . (Southern Nevada), the pronounces out of the Falklands do no longer are available in too for sure. yet, I do hear to an excellent type of the Pacific and Asian-based stations. regrettably, shortwave is being supplanted via internet streaming pronounces from those very shops. The BBC international provider now no longer beams its sign to the U.S. Deutsche Welle, Radio Norway worldwide, Radio Portugal, Radio Denmark, Radio Switzerland and Radio Finland (YLE Radio) now no longer broadcast in English on the shortwave bands. nevertheless and all, I do hear every day to approximately six or seven countries. in ordinary terms a fragment of the time whilst the whole became on the element of thirty an afternoon. yet, it nevertheless surpasses the pap and celebrity worship that passes for information on U.S. information shops. The source decrease than is a link to multiple countries who nevertheless have shortwave broadcast shops. you could make certain situations and frequency schedules via the internet website of that distinctive usa's internet website.
