Science doubt?
my sci fair proj. is
THE EFFECT OF DIFFERENT SOLUTES ON THE TEMPERATURE OF BOILING WATER.
the solutes i have used are :
sugar
salt
rock salt
baking soda
vinegar
eno
citric acid
and
disprin (the tablet)

the variation in the boiling pt is about 94 degrees C - 107 degrees celsius.

there is no drastic change
is that fine
is this project good
are my results valid ?
I AM CONFUSED!
+ i dont have the time to do it all over again or recheck my findings............
i was quite confident untill my frnd told me that THERE ISNT MUCH CHANGE AND THERE SHOULD BE A RISE NOT A FALL..............

I"M CONFUSED

In chemistry, your experiment is flawed because it does not deal with MOLES of substances. An example is, how much acetic acid does a tbs of vinegar have? Don't you see it depends on the concentration of vinegar. PLUS, volatiles like vinegar will evaporate while the solution is coming back to the boil.

You need to accurately measure the weights/volumns of water, and those things added to it, and have the boiling points of the additives listed. Generally, adding things that boil at a lower temp than water will cause the mixture to boil at a lower temp, while the opposite is true. What is the boiling point of salt?, or Sugar? Whether or not the additive ionizes or not makes a difference, too.

As stated, all you experiment does is show that combinations of things boil at different temps from a single pure substance.

Don't forget those moles - does the boiling point change if double the amount of salt it added? You may not know what moles are, but they are an easy way to measure things based on atomic weight of molecules.

It can be an interesting experiment, but could be much more interesting if you took two liters of water, and added 1, 2, 3, etc tbls of salt and recorded the results. A part of your conclusion would be that there must be some way to comparatively measure the addition of solutes (apples and apples, instead of apples and oranges - does 2 tbls of salt have the same effect as two tbls of sugar? If not, then why not?

Sorry - I'm probabbly blabbering on too much.

The boiling point of distilled water at STP is 100°C. To obtain the actual boiling point at your location, you need to use a very accurate barometer and do the calculations.

However, if you just record the boiling point of distilled water and use that as a baseline, you should be ok for your project.

Now, anything that disolves in water will affect its boiling point, either raising or lowering it.
Salt (NaCl) will definitely raise the boiling point.
Remember, science is mostly gathering data, reporting data, THEN interpreting results. Don't try to make your results fit into your ideas of what should happen, just record what you find.
Don't forget to measure, by weight, the additions to your distilled water. This will help validate your findings.

Once you have all your temps recorded, put them into a chart to show the effects of each contaminant on boiling point.

Above all, HAVE FUN WITH IT!

properly, your question is fairly confusing because of the fact Evolution and "Darwin's description of Evolution" at the instant are not the same element. Do I ever doubt that evolution has handed off? never, and neither does all of us with severe wisdom of biology (no longer even Michael Behe, the only credible figurehead of the id circulation). The information for this is purely too physically powerful, and the fossil checklist correlates too properly with extant species' physique shape, which in turn correlates too properly with biomolecular information used to make phylogenetic wood. Do i ever think of that Darwin grow to be incorrect approximately issues? Oh he grow to be incorrect some lot of issues, and present day evolutionary concept could probable take him a decade to understand in its entirety if he have been back returned. all of us understand so plenty greater desirable than Darwin could have ever imagined. the reason he continues to be so celebrated isn't because of the fact we expect of he grow to be infallible, this is because of the fact he grow to be an magnificent guy and how he grow to be waiting to look on the international around him and extrapolate the effects of what he observed on a geologic timescale is wonderful. this is almost impossible for a man or woman to understand what can ensue in 5,000 years (the quantity of time considering civilization began on a great scale), no longer to point 3.5 Billion. And maximum of of his predictions that he had no employer being waiting to make have proved real (East African roots of Human origins and so on.) that this is confusing to be a biologist and not take exhilaration in his brilliance, very equivalent to Physicists are nonetheless enormously prepared on Newton even however Einstein kinda ripped him a clean one. ultimately, I definitely settle for the reality that evolution is that this style of physically powerful and massive physique of information and documents that our present day information of precisely the way it has worked is going to be more desirable upon to the part of being incomprehensible to me have been I to be resurrected in 3 hundred years and attend a convention. Such is existence, and thanks to this i hit upon technology so compelling in the 1st place. this is self-correcting because of the fact no remember how stable your concept is, human beings will spend their careers searching for some thing incomplete approximately it so as that they are able to boost our information of the international.

It's good. I was a judge at one of those things. Just look confident in your findings and you'll get the vote. It's not like anything is riding on your data. It's just a science fair.

Remember, if you look doubtful, some idiot judge will just assume that it's wrong.

no you are fine. somethimes that happens in science. You just proved that using these things does not really change the boiling water temp. So you are fine.

you should add an amount like a tbs to a glass of water.
