The chemical released when onions are chopped seeks liquid. So something like a wet sponge or half a lemon in your mouth will help reduce the effect, but won't necessarily stop it.

so does holding a steel object between you teeth as does running a tap close to where you are chopping its got something to do with production of salive and fluid in the eyes. The running water absorbs the onion vapour (I think!)

it is actually a compound of sulphur which stings our eyes but i dont know how do some kind of chemicals from the gum react with sulphur. by the way i heard it before and according to some people it is true!

That does not work.

If you have a window near your sink, then turn the tap on and open the window. My cooking teacher told me this reduces the stinging.

Edit: I just noticed someone already mentioned this.
