Ms. Angelou endorses Hillary Clinton. I respect Ms. Angelou as a writer and a person of substance.

Perhaps there is something in Obama's polciies that does not sit well with Ms. Angelou. She is a type of person who would judge on policies rather than skin color

I suppose the cynic would say that gender trumps race in her consideration.

The more likely answer is that Maya Angelou was a strong supporter of Bill Clinton, believing African-Americans fared generally well under his administration. Sen. Clinton also has accumulated a great amount of experience in the Senate and in her time behind the scenes at the White House and is actually well-regarded as an effective Senator by members of both parties.

After weighing these considerations, Maya Angellou simply went with the person she believes can win and will be a strong leader and spokesperson for the liberal positions she trumpets.

Sen. Obama needs a little more seasoning which a few more years in the Senate will help him develop. If he is not the Democratic nominee in 2008 and the Democrat loses, look for Obama to be the odds on favorite in 2012--perhaps Angelou would support him then.

You have to understand that Maya Angelou wouldn't have risen to the level she has if it wasn't for the Clinton's. When Bill Clinton was inaugurated into office, he chose Ms. Angelou to read one of her poems. They have since shared a great friendship and have supported each other throughout his political career and her literary career. Of course she would again support the Clinton's when Hillary is now running. She is being a true friend and standing by the people who helped her career. I hope this answered your question. And you also have to remember color is only the skin you were born in, not the person it makes you. You make the person you are today! :)

Maya Angelou is an American citizen who has the right to endorse whomever she chooses. Just because an African American candidate is running for president and has a legitimate chance of winning, does not mean every African American has to automatically endorse him. If she feels that Hilary Clinton is the better candidate she should vote for her. There will be other Americans who feel that Barack Obama is the best candidate and vote for him. I support freedom of choice.

Ms. Angelou was very visible throughout the Clinton years. She is a close personal friend of the Clinton's

We would be in big trouble is everyone voted by color, by religion, region, or anything else except qualification. If Ms. Angelou thinks Obama would make a poorer president than Clinton, but she votes for him because of his color, she is a poor citizen.

Maya Angelou and the Clintons have been friends for many years....and in politics, friendship oftentimes means so little, so I give Maya Angelou props for being a true friend.

So, because Angelou is Black she should support a Black candidate regardless of substance? Isn't that a bit racist?

Angelou has old ties to the Clintons, and to Arkansas, where she spent most of her childhood. And she is quite capable of making up her mind on the basis of factors other than race.

Being a person of substance, she is backing the candidate she believes is the best for our country, instead of choosing Obama simply because his skin color is closer to hers. I respect her too, very much.
