Sometimes I either need reassurance, or I need a fresh perspective. Often I put it on here because I'm afraid anyone else I know that I'd talk to would be too close to be objective about it or would have ulterior motives. I still have to wade through the answers on here, but it usually results in me working it out more clearly than if I hadn't bothered to ask the question.

I don't really ask very personal questions here but here's my guess. The Yahoo! Answers community provides anonymity to people who ask questions. Nobody really knows who you really are in the world and the people who answer your questions or who just come across it are people from all over the world and possibly very far away from you. So, people feel more comfortable asking things that they wouldn't ask people they know for different reasons, eg. fear of embarrassment. Because on here you're basically your nickname and your questions. That's all people have to go on and that is not enough for a person to be recognized.
But it's also a problem cos some of the questions require someone who has a more in-depth knowledge about the situation and what's going on REALLY with the person, which makes it kinda hard to be able to answer well, sometimes, but anyhow it's sort of the same sometimes in real life.
I've started rambling so I'll stop right here.
Toodles.

Some times a person has no one to ask like in my case the people I turned to are now dead so I am at loss. Then if you ask a co worker you get gossiped about. At times I may Ask a ? here hoping someone may give me LIGHT that has been through it, or they are a professional that may take time out to give ans here for free. Most people really do not know you so you are not embarrassed by it as much etc. TO some this may be a hobby AND TV STINKS> many go to the net, Why do I take the time to go to Trip advisor and tell my experience at a hotel, a city, a vacation etc or do it on Yahoo? TO HELP PEOPLE, warn them, or there is zero on TV so I go to the net. Just because a person asks a ? here doesn't make them a looser, yet I can see that some weird people may just want to start Junk to get entertained where others need advise, solutions etc. SO WHAT ARE THE REASON YOU HEARD WE COME HERE, you came here.......

Whether I ask a personal question or a general question doesn't matter to me. I'm not handing out any personal information about myself that would be deemed as harmful to my own well-being. Yahoo provides this site as a means for people to come together and be a resource based on experience, knowledge or whatever the case may be to help others. I think it's great. I like Yahoo! Answers. It's helped me when I have a question and need an answer or opinion, or advice. I'm compelled to ask a question when I think of something I don't know the answer to.

I love to answer these questions. Sometimes it makes me think about a topic I hadn't given much attention before. Sometimes its a topic or situation that touches my heart. Sometimes it's just to give an encouraging word.
I've only asked one question and it was to see what other people's take was on something that had bothered me for a long time. It wasn't really personal, since Sociology is about group behaviors, but it was great to get other people's take on it.
I would never put anything truly personal here because so many people have a tendency to be thoughtless and arrogant, or truly hurtful... all for 2 points.

It feels like Yahoo! answers is a community, and when your afraid to ask people you know questions, or if you just can't get an answer from them, this is the best option. Sometimes people can be jerks but all the great answers that you get to your questions make up for it. My motivation to ask questions is because I know I will get truthful, good answers. My motivation to answer quesitons is that by helping other people, it makes this online community better. The points are an okay motivation, too.

I think people ask questions here because they remain anonymous (in most cases). They can ask almost anything they want, without the fear of family, friends, etc. knowing what is really bothering them.
Some people really want to know details: How do I fix my_______? How do I upgrade my computer? What type gas-efficient car would be good for my family of 5?
Of course, some people ask random questions, just because they have nothing better to do. Some people enjoy riling other people up. Some people just want to see how much they can get away with here.
As for me, I find it difficult to think of good questions. For a while I did not ask any at all. Finally, someone told me that I was being selfish--that I was not doing my part for my network (?)

People getting a lot of response here at Yahoo Answers and that's what they like. Maybe those are questions they don't want to ask somebody they know, because they want to keep their privacy. There are a lot of teenagers on this site as well and they a curious and they might not be very comfortable asking those question in person.

If you have a personal question, you're most likely emarassed to ask it to anyone who knows you in person. On Yahoo Answers, nobobdy will really ever find out who you are.
Its like asking a question about puberty to your parents versus Yahoo Answers. Most people would go online and ask a bunch of random people that they don't know because they feel more comfortable.
Its just interesting to get opinions from a wide spectrum of people even if its not personal.

To get intelligent answers from individuals who won't give a biased opinion. I noticed that strangers even find it easier to talk to me about personal situations...because they don't know me, and who can I spread their business to? Chances are I may never see them again. I don't always ask personal questions but I'm confident that I will get a good response and advice when I do. I don't feel as though I'm putting myself out there like that..if I asked my neighbors a personal question then yeah I'd be putting myself out there like that. On Yahoo you get to meet some really good people, and it's enjoyable to conversate on a diverse range of topics. I also like to offer help and appreciate any help given. I've also gotten great recipes, and encouragement from Christians.
