No one ever votes for the best players in any category. In Japan they try to get them to vote for Hideki Matsui and Ichiro and now Okajima. In the Dominican they just want to vote for Ortiz, Ramirez and Reyes. They should do away with voting altogether.

I always thought the All-Star game should be treated as an exhibition, and I had absolutely no problem with the game ending in a tie a few years back. But, since they insist on the game having meaning, I think they should do away with the fan vote altogether and have the selection done by a combination of the players and coaches.
I don't understand how they can allow a popularity contest to help to decide home field advantage for the World Series.

C'mon man. The ASG has always been a popularity contest, never about the best players in the game.
Besides, most fans of the game don't even watch the ASG. Other than the last couple years, the scores are usually blowouts, and nobody plays hard because nobody wants to get hurt playing a game that doesn't impact the standings.

Japanese players do well in All-Star Voting, but the bigger problem is team bias. Seems like every year, some team has a disproportionate number of votes. This year, look at Detroit, where every member of their team is in the top few at their positions. Even mediocre Sean Casey. A little of this is due to them being in WS last year, but this happens every year with teams not in contention.

You are correct. Two years ago, Sox fans got Podsednik in. And he deserved it above all other. Last year they got A.J. in. He was only the 4th best choice.
I understand that all of the All Star Voting is done with popularity in mind. But you are right. This final vote has become almost as bad as politics with all these stupid "vote for" campaigns.
Do away with them all.

Basically whichever team has the largest fan base will have their player win. I think that the final fan vote should be done away with.

Give the vote back to the players and managers who at least know who is deserving to be in the game. Half of the fans have no clue who they are voting for, and why.

I think it works, the people who are voting are the people who are watching. So why not?
