Assuming he WAS married when you two got married, your marriage was NEVER valid, because he couldn't marry anybody. So, unless you got married again, you have never been married, so can't get annulment or divorce. This needs a lawyer. Don't rely on our opinions. Talk to a professional.

You don't actually need to do either. Since your husband was still legally married at the time that you married him, no legal marriage exists or ever did between the two of you.
The formality of an annulment might be worthwhile to help clear up what is likely a morass of legal issues, not the least of which is your tax situation.

Get married again, you never were, no one can contract a marriage while legally in another one.
If you don't wish to have this spread about, get a license and tell people you are having a renewal of vows. Let the minister in on it but no one else.
He may have though his ex got the divorce without knowing she didn't. That happens more than we know.
Of course this presupposes you want to stay married to him. If you don't you can just leave, you don't need to do anything legally.

Sweetie, hate to be the bearer of bad news but your marriage isn't legal if he was still married to someone else at the time. If you want out, leave. You are not obligated to do anything unless you two have tied the knot since 1996.

In many states, your marriage to him was never even considered legally valid if he were still married to someone else. Each state has different laws, though. Best to consult with a good family law/divorce law attorney. Good luck!

Well it might come as a shock.....legally you were never married. The reason being the marriage was illegal because of the fact that your "husband" of 17 years was legally married to some one else at the time you got married. His was a bigamous marriage.

Consult a lawyer--the marriage was probably never even VALID....but best to hear from an expert.
You might not even have to pay the lawyer, just find one that offers a free initial consultation.

Depending on where you live, the laws are different. I think you might have a good case for annulment.

You were never married legally, but depending on the state you live in, you may now be "common-law married", which occurs after a couple has cohabitated for longer than (IIRC) 7 years.
Seek legal council on this one.

I believe the only way to get a marriage annulled is if you've been married less than a year!
