You are sleeping soundly at night when you suddenly get this sinking/falling feeling and your whole body jumps and you wake up. Was just wondering if anybody else has felt this.
What could be the cause of this if you know?

I think we all get it from time to time. I've no idea what causes it though.

Apparently it's called a hypnagogic jerk...

A hypnic or hypnagogic jerk is an involuntary muscle twitch (commonly known as a myoclonic twitch) which occurs during the transition into hypnagogia. It is often described as an electric shock or falling sensation, and can cause movement of the body in bed. Hypnic jerks are experienced by most people, especially when exhausted or sleeping uncomfortably

I HATE that-it happens to me all the time! I believe I heard that it has to do with you muscles and body trying to relax your body has a survival instinct and goes on the defensive because the physical affects of sleep and dying are about the same, so your body gives a "shot" of adreneline to jump start the body to keep you alive, since it doesn't understand that you just want some FREAKIN sleep!

You'd be at the set of coronation road! In idea I bet if not anything ever happend, there might had been no Big Bang which might imply that stipulations for lifestyles might no longer had been created!! In physics isn't there a legislation that states EVERY ACTION HAS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITTE REACTION?? Therefore if there was once no preliminary movement, evoloution might no longer exist.... Cool! Existential questions:)

I hate that!! I don't know what causes that. It hasn't happened in a while though, thankfully.

I've been told its that your soul leaves your body when you sleep and thats what it feels like when it enters your body again..... Whether or not you want to believe that is up to you.

I have had it happen. Usually just on the brink of really deep sleep. I have heard, although never confirmed, that all your muscles relax at the same time is what causes it. I hope this helps. This is my way of answering your question.

Our brain is still active when we sleep; however, the control element we normally apply when we are awake, is not working. This results in unrealistic or surreal feelings and dreams. I had many similar dreams, at least the ones I could remember.

I'm not sure. Sometimes I have felt like I've left the ground or I'm falling and then I wake up. If that's what you mean.
