I'm 12 weeks pregnant and I have been having these horrible migraines. I get them even if I'm not pregnant but now it's even worse and I haven't taken nothing for it, don't want to hurt the baby. Sometimes I can't even get out my room. Got an appointment next Friday and will be telling my DR.

Hi , I understand you completely. I suffer from migraines myself and I remeber when I was pg getting up with one and going to sleep with one. The situation was so aweful one day that I drove to the ER and they put an iv and gave me some drug that can only be administer under a doctor checking constantly on you. The dr asked me like very 10 mins how did I feel. After 35 mins I was feeling good, no pain at all. At that point the took the iv off and sent me home. It's better to talk to a dr about your migraines because in the meantime the only thing you can have is tylenol and I know from experience that it doesn't work for a horrible migraine.

I suffer from sever migraines and continued with them through all 3 of my babies. The only way that I was able to slow the rate of them was to watch what i ate. No red dye foods ,smoked processed meats, high decaffeinated drinks , aged cheese's. These are just a few of the things look the list up on the web. When you do get a migraine try coca cola classic the caffeine in this drink will help you. (Room Temp.) Try a cold cloth on your forehead. There is a safe drug to take after a certain month that you can take but only if you are unable to keep food down because of getting sick from these. Towards the middle of pregnancy they should level off when your hormones do. That is way you are getting them now your hormones are all over the place. Try the foods and good luck to you I know it is not easy. Congratulations! And Good Luck

I didn't get migraines until very shortly after my 1st pregnancy. I called my OB about this last week after a HORRIBLE one came on. He told me Tylenol only but that if I absolutely had to, take a Maxalt. Benefits outweigh the risk kind of thing, I guess. I didn't take the Maxalt, I'm too scared to do that. I just deal with it (it SUX). I first started getting headaches (not migraines, or if they were, I wasn't yet diagnosed) during my 1st pregnancy and later found out they were an early indicator of preeclampsia. Good luck, try to find a quiet, dark place, if you can.

Experts don't know exactly why carrying a child tends to make your head ache more often, but one good guess is the hormonal free-for-all that's taking place in your body. Going cold turkey on caffeine can also make your head pound.

Other potential culprits include lack of sleep or general fatigue, sinus congestion, allergies, eyestrain, stress, depression, hunger, and dehydration.

Take Tylenol!! If It Continues Call Your Doctor.

work with your doctor on this one. Follow HIS or HER advice not the advice of a bunch of people WITHOUT medical degrees on yahoo answers.

I will tell you what my doctor did for me, he gave me a standing order prescription for Tylenol with Codeine, I have horrid migraines, bad enough to land me in the hospital for almost a month last August. Guess what, my son was born 2 weeks ago and is absolutely perfectly healthy even though I took the dreaded medication.

I trust my doctor thats why I see him and follow his advice, if you trust yours then discuss the situation with him and work out a plan that will help you get through this. Good luck.

EDIT: I have also found that in my situation cutting out any and all dairy containing products from my diet makes my migraines go away. Obviously you need your calcium during pregnancy however so I took calcium supplements.

Avoid anything with Aspartame, like diet sodas.

Up your magnesium intake. Good sources include dark green, leafy vegetables, fruits and nuts. Magnesium is a muscle relaxer, and it can help those with migraines.

Exercise regularly, but not during an attack. That can make it worse.

Avoid foods containing tyramine (an amino acid)--chocolate, aged cheeses, organ meats, vinegar, ketchup, salad dressings, sour cream, yogurt and yeast extracts. Also avoid foods containing MSG.

Yoga.

Relax as often as possible.

Apply a soft, cold ice pack wrapped in a towel to your head when you feel a migraine coming on.

I suffer from these bad myself if I don't stop them in time I end up in the ER no fun :(. If I know it's coming or can feel it coming on I take tylenol. My OB doc perscribed me Tylenol 3 with coding ask your doc for that it will help I also take it with Mt.Dew and if I get the chance I lay down with an ice pack on my head i turn of the tv and lights have total silence and just try to fall asleep. And try not to cry if it gets to bad it willmake it worse. that's what I do.. sometime massageing (sp) your temples help as well. hope that helps.

I was given a "Over-the-Counter Medication (may be used during pregnancy)" list from the doctor's office during one of my visits.

For headaches it says it is safe to take:

Tylenol ES
Tylenol PM
Tylenol Arthritis

Also, try to lay down in a dark, quiet room with the coldest, rung out washcloth you can get to lay over your eyes.

The medications on the "DO NOT TAKE" list are:

asprin
ibuprophen

when i was pregnant i also got migraines, but i refused to take any medication during my pregnancy... even safe ones like Tylenol. what i did was just sleep them off. that was very affective for me.

I started to get headaches really bad around that time and my doctor prescribed Midrin. She said if this didn't help they would go to Tylenol with Codine, but the Midrin helped. Regular tylenol just wasn't cutting it!! They have gotten better the further along I got. I might get one every two weeks now. Hope you get better, I know it sucks!! Congrats.
