Why would you think it was the greeks or the arabs?

The Greeks invented philosophy and they may have talked about democracy all the while depending upon slaves to do most of the work.

The arabs are credited with the foundation of mathematics but beyond that what have they contributed to the world?

Overall, as a world historian, I would have to say Great Britain. All the leading democratic societies of the world today are offshoots of the British empire.

British explorers circled the globe in tiny ships and charted the oceans. The Enlightenment really got its roots in Britain following the religious reformation, then the Industrial revolution occurred which opened up international trade on a scale never previously imagined. Many of the greatest early engineers and scientists were British.

The English legal system has been used as a basis for the systems of numerous other countries, and an English law degree is regarded more highly than any other.

Etc, etc. And the fact that English is the world's most widely spoken language should indicate how influential that country has been.

Britian . No Doubt.

Although not perfect & with definate interests in resources & trade , Britain was heavily influence by utilitarian morals . This tended to be expressed by sympathy for the less advantaged. Dont get me wrong Britian had snobs & exploiters. But the world was a much safer place with the British Empire. We did bad things and made mistakes but we also did wonderful things . India is the Worlds largest democracy created as a union of states by Oxford educated Gandhi. Britain & its commonwealth stood up to Hitler & the Japanese. Education & the abolition of Slavery & superstition were great things. And our best contributions to the world are Australia, Canada , New Zealand & the English language which is the most adaptable language. Although Christianity was encouraged by Missionaries , Britian never systematically persecuted every other religion unlike the Spanish. Nor did we have Gladiators and death squads like the Romans.

Don't you think that the world has had several nations or empires which "did" much for the world? And what do you count as "done"? Material benefits? Legal accomplishments? Spritual knowledge?

Why not have everyone state their own ethnic or national background when replying to such a question? Why do you think less of the Romans? What do you know about them? What is your educational level?

James G is right, Mesopotamia was the first in so many things. Also, don't forget China, we got paper, porcelain, the printing press (it existed there long before Europe), and gunpowder from the Chinese.
For the person above who claimed the US (Timhinla), you should back it up with facts and not simply espouse nationalist rhetoric.
To Marguerite, the "world historian," you may want to look into arab history a bit more. The arabs made a number of advances in medicine (especially in pharmacology and optical science). They also did a lot in preserving Western culture as they revered Aristotle and reintroduced him to the West in the high middle ages.

No - it was the Sumerians. They invented cities, writing, the wheel and wide-scale agriculture. They lived in Mesopotamia - which is now Iran/Iraq. I think we're talking about 6 - 7 thousand years ago. They had organised religion and might have been the first people to develop a real 'civilisation' and culture. In other words, they created so many things that we just take for granted now. Without them, the Greeks and Romans would have had ziltch!

The British Empire without a doubt. The largest and most benevolent of all empires. Read Nial Ferguson's "How Britain Made the Modern World".

Different empires achieved different things, from the early egyptians wrting of hyrograhics, to the greek philosophers and Roman government. The real question is who preserved their inventions most.
